Seymour continued its Hoosier Hills Conference tennis tournament, hosting nearby Columbus East in a consolation match on Friday.

The team moved to the consolation bracket after losing to Floyd Central on Monday, eventually defeating Jennings County on Thursday.

The Owls took care of business against the Olympians, sweeping the meet by the score of 5-0. It’s the second sweep of the season against Columbus East.

The game took place right before the 2023 Jackson Bowl at Seymour High School.

Seymour head coach Jacob Hunt spoke about the dominant victory over the Olympians.

“I was very pleased with the playing I saw from the team on Friday,” Hunt said. “A 5-0 win at home always feels good, and I’m proud of the team for how well they played. One doubles really came out and played with energy right out of the gate.”

Seymour No. 1 Joe Schmidt took on Erik Takahashi, winning the match, 3-6, 6-5, 12-10. No. 2 Parker Thompson dominated Tyler Ernst 6-2, 6-0.

Owls No. 3 Carter Stein downed Henry Ulrich, winning 6-3, 6-4.

In doubles action, the number one duo of Shun Takeuchi and Joel Stevens won their match with Brady Redelman and Ethan Bumbalough, winning 6-3, 6-0.

The second matchup between Drew Handloser and Xavier DuBois grabbed the victory over Jacob Dettner and Trevor Ernst, winning 6-1, 6-3.

“Our team put it all together against the Olympians,” Hunt said.

“It was nice to see the team play well as we head into sectional play next week. It was tough to face Floyd Central in the first round of the conference tournament, but I’m proud of the boys for rebounding with 2 wins to end conference play on a good note.”

Seymour is back in action on Monday, facing Columbus North, before sectional play begins on Wednesday.

Hunt spoke on the matchup with North on Monday.

“This will be another great challenge as we move to the postseason,” he said. “I’m excited for the team to get another opportunity to compete.”

Sectional will take place from Sept. 26 to 30. Bedford North Lawrence, Brownstown Central, Trinity Lutheran and Jennings County will fill out the teams along with Seymour.

If the Owls can repeat as sectional champions, they will compete in the Columbus North Regional on Oct. 3 and 4.

Good luck to Seymour, Trinity Lutheran and Brownstown Central in the sectional meet on Wednesday at Seymour High School.
