BROWNSTOWN — The Brownstown Central boys tennis team won No. 2 and No. 3 singles and both doubles in straight sets to defeat Jennings County 4-1 at home on Tuesday afternoon.

The Braves’ win over the Panthers is their first of the season.

Braves coach Donnie Thomas said he liked how his team came out aggressive.

In a rain-shortened match at Paoli on Monday, Thomas had Lane Steward at No. 1 doubles and Chase Brock at No. 3 singles.

He switched them against the Panthers and said he was pleased with the results.

“I thought I would want to play it the other way around, and I thought Chase played really well tonight. The doubles played a lot better. The competition was a little stiffer over at Paoli,” he said.

Steward was the first Brave off the court after defeating Isaac Lightner 6-0, 6-1.

Brock teamed up with Evan Schneider to beat Brady Sentz and Ty Zorlaut 7-5, 6-2.

Thomas said, “(Jennings’) No. 1 doubles was a lot better and I thought we played a lot better. Our lobs were a lot better. We were hitting a lot of things out. We were a little more relaxed. Chase makes a lot of good cross-court shots. His serving still needs some work.”

Pierson Wheeler clinched the win for the Braves with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Ryan Schuck at No. 2 singles, and Max Peters and Brady Davis topped Cole Skinner and Rider Ruddick 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

Thomas said, “No. 2 doubles finished some points a little better. So did No. 1 doubles.”

Jennings’ Parker Bales was a 6-0, 6-2 winner over Smith Hackman at No. 1 singles.

“Singles played really well,” Thomas said. “Smith, with the luck of the draw, always gets the good player, and it’s tough down there. He plays a lot of good kids.

“We’ll get there,” Thomas said. “We’ll practice today and work on things we need to. I was pleased with the match, much better than the Paoli match.” The match at Paoli was stopped by rain.”

The Braves will travel to North Harrison on Thursday for their Mid-Southern Conference opener.

Their next home match is against Edinburgh on Tuesday.
