Elaine Manos Hirtzel, age 84, a native of Corydon, Indiana and a resident of North Vernon, Indiana, passed away on Friday, July 28, 2023 at Our Hospice Inpatient Facility in Columbus, Indiana, surrounded by her family. She was born on June 22, 1939 to the late James Manos and the late Mary (Kutche) Manos. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Elaine grew up in North Vernon, Indiana where her parents owned and operated “The Sweet Shop” and it was there that she met her beloved husband of over 67 years, Robert V. Hirtzel. Over the years she was employed by The Shirt Factory, Valeo and Jay C Food Store, all in Seymour, Indiana. Together, Elaine and Robert owned and operated Robert V. Hirtzel Painting until retirement in 1998 and continues under the care of their son. The career she was most proud of was the raising of her four children.

Elaine will forever be remembered as a loving, hardworking, spitfire of a lady that was very meticulous with the task at hand. She enjoyed the Cincinnati Red’s, gardening, both veggies and flowers and canning the fruits of her labor. She also enjoyed camping, fishing and the casinos. She was a wonderful cook and the family will forever treasure the memories of her fried chicken, Greek meat balls and potato salad.

She will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her and each life that she touched in her own special way.

She is survived by her husband , Robert V. Hirtzel of North Vernon, Indiana, one son, Christopher V. Hirtzel and his wife Kim of Seymour, Indiana. Three daughters, Joyce Welker and her husband Larry of Greenwood, Indiana, Mary Holycross and her husband Greg of Seymour, Indiana and Barbara Hoene and her husband Mark of Seymour, Indiana. One sister, Katina Rackey of Fort Wayne, Indiana and two sisters in law, Susan Manos and BethAnn Ashcraft. Five grandchildren, Traci Cox, Suzanne Toppe, Ryan Hirtzel, Scott Hirtzel and Jennifer Wetzel. Six step grandchildren, Josh Holycross, Conner Hoene, Mayson Nolan, Laura Cochran, Mike Welker and Mark Welker. Twenty-two great and great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Constantine Manos.

In keeping with her wishes, the family has chosen cremation and a private family celebration of life will be held at a later date.

The family requests that memorial donations be directed to St. Mary’s Catholic Church in North Vernon, Indiana or to the charity of choice in her honor.
