Moren to take Hoosiers on Greece Foreign Tour next month

The Indiana women’s basketball program has been no stranger to being in the spotlight over the past couple of seasons.

The Hoosiers have consistently been ranked in The Associated Press top 25, have been a host site in back-to-back NCAA Tournaments and had deep runs in the postseason.

Now, the IU women’s program will take that spotlight overseas as it announced it would be going on a foreign tour in Greece from Aug. 1 to 10.

It’s the program’s first foreign trip in six years. Indiana previously took a foreign tour under head coach Teri Moren in 2017 when it traveled to Italy. The NCAA allows teams to take a foreign tour once every four years. Indiana is allotted 10 practice days leading up to the trip, which will begin this month.

This year’s trip will begin in Athens and make stops in the Gulf of Corinth, where it will explore Nafpaktos and Delphi. A full-day trip to Olympia is also on the agenda, where the group will experience the ancient Olympic Gymnasium and Stadium. The team also will play two games, one in Athens and one in the Patras, during its time in Greece.

The tour is made possible by the Indiana University Athletics Women’s Excellence initiative. The mission is to raise private support to elevate its 13 women’s varsity sports and enhance the overall student-athlete experience of IU’s female student-athletes.

Moren and the Hoosiers are coming off a 2022-23 season where they finished with a 28-4 overall record, their first Big Ten regular season championship in 40 years and their first No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

After the season, Moren agreed to an extended contract that will make her among the highest-paid women’s basketball coaches in the country.

Moren’s deal features an average annual compensation of more than $1.3 million, which ranks second in the Big Ten and among the top coaches nationally. The contract has also been extended by two years through the 2028-29 season and includes more significant performance bonuses that can enhance the deal, including the following: Big Ten regular and postseason championships, top three Big Ten regular season finishes, NCAA Tournament participation and victories and conference and/or national coach of the year accolades.

“I am honored and humbled to receive a contract extension from Indiana University,” the Seymour native said after signing the extension. “I am incredibly proud of what we have been able to build during our time at IU, which is a direct reflection of our student-athletes, coaches, support staff and fans, who have all played a big part in our success. I am excited for what’s happening in the future of our program. A very heartfelt thank you to President Whitten and Scott Dolson for their support and their trust in me to lead this program for the long term. I am proud to be a Hoosier.”

Moren is the reigning AP National Coach of the Year and the IU program’s all-time winningest coach.

The 2023-24 Hoosier roster that heads to Greece next month will feature four returners from a team that won the regular season Big Ten Championship outright for the first time in 40 years. First team All-American Mackenzie Holmes highlights Indiana’s roster for the upcoming season along with rising seniors Chloe Moore-McNeil and Sydney Parrish.
