Trinkle, Thompson share top track honor

It’s no easy feat to reach the track and field state finals, but this year, Jackson County saw two individuals advance past the regional to compete on the biggest stage in Indiana.

Those two were Seymour’s Brooke Trinkle and Brownstown Central’s Camryn Thompson. Due to their impressive seasons in their respective events, Trinkle and Thompson have been named The Tribune’s Co-Girls Track and Field Athletes of the Year.

For Trinkle, it was her third appearance in the state finals as she qualified in her sophomore and junior seasons, as well. She didn’t have a freshman season due to COVID-19.

Each year, Trinkle qualified in the 1600, and in her junior year, she also made it in the 4×800 relay.

For Thompson, who also was a senior this past spring, this was her first time making it to the state finals, which was a goal of hers to reach before her career came to an end.

When the BC senior qualified at the Bloomington North Regional, she described it as feeling “almost like a dream come true.”

En route to her path to state, Thompson broke the school record in the 300 hurdles on a few different occasions throughout the season. The final time came at the regional when she ran 45.98.

Thompson also was part of the 4×100 relay team that broke the school record at regional in 50.94.

Thompson was a regional qualifier in the 300 hurdles, 100 hurdles, 4×100 relay and 4×400 relay. At the state meet, she finished up her career placing 20th in 46.95.

For Trinkle, she ended her Seymour track career by finishing 21st overall with a season-best time of 5:16.24. Her PR in the 1600 was 5:12.82.

After making it to state in her previous two seasons, it was very important to Trinkle to make it back a third time her senior year.

On her path to state, Trinkle also became a three-time sectional champion in the 1600, and she also was the sectional champ in the 4×800 relay.

Both athletes were their team’s respective MVPs at the awards banquet. Trinkle shared her MVP award with teammate Sydney Montgomery.

Trinkle will continue her track and field career at Marian University next year, where she will study business, and Thompson will attend the University of Southern Indiana and study elementary education.
