NORTH VERNON — After a little bit of a down week last week, the Seymour girls track and field bounced back on Tuesday night with some strong performances to place fourth overall in the Hoosier Hills Conference meet at Jennings County.

Floyd Central was first with 152 points, New Albany had 111.50, Columbus East 76, Seymour 72, Jeffersonville 61, Jennings County 43.50 and Bedford North Lawrence 28.

“We had some people that were sick and some injuries that was kind of disappointing, but all in all, I thought the girls’ performances were great tonight,” head coach Spencer Sunbury said. “I was a little worried because we kind of had a down stretch last week, but got some time off and had a good night.”

Seymour’s 4×800 relay team of Kelly Beavers, AnnMarie Shuler, Vivienne Siefker and Brooke Trinkle placed second behind Floyd Central with a time of 10:23.42. Trinkle had a big kick at the end of the race to beat Columbus East’s team, who ran a 10:24.36.

Trinkle was second in the 1600 with a time of 5:28.69, and Shuler was fifth in 5:49.79. Beavers was fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:36.12, and Siefker was third in the 3200 with a time of 12:25.62.

Evan Snyder placed fifth in the 100 hurdles with a personal best time of 17.64.

“I think that I looked back at what I did wrong that I wanted to fix during the trials, and it helped me make the difference,” Snyder said on her race. “My steps and my starts were just off, and I was too cautious with what I was doing. In the finals, just I went all in and I did it.”

Snyder was one of the Owls dealing with some sickness, and she thinks there’s still room for improvement but was happy with her performance.

“I wish I would’ve placed better and I wish I would’ve picked it up more at the end, but I’m happy that I PR’ed,” she said. “I definitely think that it will help when I’m not super congested when I’m doing them, so hopefully I’ll do pretty good at sectionals at next week.”

Seymour’s 4×100 relay team of Sydnie Kingery, Kamryn Aynes, Anna Marks and Sydney Montgomery placed seventh with a time of 54.67.

Montgomery then ran the 400 and placed third overall in 1:01.68. Montgomery was also second in high jump at 4-10 and Kate Connell was fourth in high jump at 4-8. Connell was also fifth place in pole vault with a leap of 7-0.

Jaidyn Nichols was sixth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 53.83, and Seymour’s 4×400 relay of Beavers, Montgomery, Stuckwisch and Trinkle was fourth in 4:30.11.

Kiley Sons placed third overall in discus with a throw of 99-7, and she was also third in shot put at 31-3.5.

The Owls will now turn their attention to sectionals next Tuesday, which they will host at Bulleit Stadium. Seymour is the defending sectional champion and has won the sectional title the past two seasons. They will look to make it a three-peat next week.

“Tonight was the little spark I needed to see going into next week,” Sunbury said. “I think the girls are excited to try to defend that title. I think they’ve been talking about next Tuesday more than this Tuesday, but they’re excited about, and I like where we stand right now. As long as we don’t get over-confident about things and realize we still have to come out and perform, I think we’ll be fine.”
