Exercising their right

Thumbs up to the registered voters in Seymour who took time out of their busy days on Tuesday or during early voting to cast ballots in the primary election. A related thumbs up to all of the candidates for city offices who threw their hats into the ring and then went out and campaigned. That’s how the system is supposed to work.

JAG specialist

Thumbs up to Celeste Bowman, who recently was named JAG Indiana’s April Specialist of the Month. The Reddington woman, who is the JAG specialist at Seymour High School, was recognized for her activities during the month. Those included helping conduct a countywide career fair and prepping JAG students for a visit to the Statehouse in Indianapolis that included a tour and meeting with their local state senator.

Celebrating kids

Thumbs up to those who made possible the return of the ever-popular Kids Fest after a three-year absence because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Kids Fest, started as a Leadership Jackson County project in 1998, is now organized by Child Care Network. A related thumbs up to Seymour-Jackson Elementary School fifth-grader Trenten Cottingham, who was named the winner of this year’s Kids Fest T-shirt contest.

Golden jubilee

Thumbs up to Carol Lambring, who is celebrating 50 years with Montgomery, Elsner and Pardieck. She joined the Seymour law firm as a secretary in 1973 when she was 18. She later graduated from the Institute of Paralegal Training in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and became the first certified paralegal in Indiana.

Voice of the Owls

Thumbs up to Seymour’s Bud Shippee, who was inducted into the Indiana Sportswriters and Sportscasters Hall of Fame on April 16 in Greenwood. Shippee, a 1970 graduate of Seymour High School and a 1975 graduate of Indiana State University, started broadcasting Seymour sports with WZZB in 1976 and broadcast more than 2,400 high school football, basketball and football games. Shippee began his career working with his father, Bob, who began broadcasting games in the old Shields High School gymnasium. Bob and Bud broadcasted Seymour games for a total of 70 years between them.

Making an impact

Thumbs up to Sims Bark, a family-owned manufacturing company recognized by the Crothersville Town Council for making a huge impact on the community’s landscape since breaking ground in the spring of 2019. The company received a certificate of appreciation for excellence in community service for May from the council.

An ace

Thumbs up to Trinity Lutheran High School junior Andrew Lemming, who made a hole-in-one on Saturday on the second hole of Shadowood Golf Course in Seymour during the Cougar Invitational.

Outstanding service

Thumbs up to the staff with Covered Bridge Health Campus, a Trilogy Health Services senior living community in Seymour. Covered Bridge recently was honored with an award for outstanding customer service during the company’s annual spring meeting in April in Louisville, Kentucky.
