Braves take second in Edgewood Invitational

BLOOMINGTON — The conditions between Brownstown Central’s first golf invitational on April 1 and its second golf invitational on April 15 were quite drastic.

From the howling, cold winds at Shadowood Golf Course to open the season to the calm, 70-degree warm weather at Cascades Golf Course, the Braves were a little more comfortable out there on the links.

Brownstown had a good showing at the Edgewood Invitational, as the Braves shot a 315 to place second overall. South Spencer was the team winner with a 309.

After Brownstown in second place, it went Cathedral 326, Edgewood A 341, Greencastle 349, Eastern Greene 371, Indian Creek 375, Brownstown B 377, Brown County 494, Orleans 399, Owen Valley 418 and Edgewood B 455.

Brownstown freshman Micah Sheffer earned the top medalist spot in the invite as he shot 1-under with a 70.

“Micah played a very consistent round of golf,” BC head coach Brent Hattabaugh said. “His course management helped him not have bad holes (two bogies and three birdies). I’m very pleased that he was medalist in a tournament that is played on our sectional course.”

Caiden Gwin also earned a medal by placing fourth on the afternoon, shooting a personal-best 75.

“Caiden hit the ball very well off the tee,” Hattabaugh said. “He has put a lot of work in over the summer to improve. He shot 86 last year at Cascades.”

After Sheffer and Gwin, Matthew Reedy shot an 83, Chandler Stahl 87 and Smith Hackman 90.

Last year, Brownstown shot a 352 as a team at Cascades. Hattabaugh said this is the best team score in his four years coaching the Braves.

Leading the Brownstown B team to an eighth-place finish were Carter Covert at 91, Collin Downing 94, Connor Gwin 96, Elix Preston 96 and Jaren Cunningham 97.

The Braves went a full two weeks between their first match and second match, so it was a lot of practice time at Hickory Hills. One match was canceled against Mitchell between that time span, but now, Brownstown’s schedule is about to ramp up.

The Braves play at Brown County today at 5 p.m., play at Columbus North on Tuesday at 5 p.m. and then host Seymour on Friday at 5 p.m.

Brownstown closes out the week on Saturday at the Bud Bennett Memorial at Old Capital Golf Club in Corydon. Teams competing in that include Floyd Central, Providence, Lanesville, Borden, Corydon Central, New Albany, Perry Central, North Harrison and Bedford North Lawrence. It’s a later start in the day at 1:30 p.m.

“We just need to keep improving overall as a team,” Hattabaugh said. “We have kids competing to get into top five, which is making everyone better.”
