Seymour firefighters rescued a man from a burning home Tuesday afternoon on the city’s southeast side.

Firefighters received a report at 2:59 p.m. of heavy smoke coming out of the home at 4612 Ashwood Drive and were on the scene at 2:50 p.m., according to a report from Fire Chief Brad Lucas.

An aggressive interior fire attack and search led to the location of an unresponsive man in his 50s inside the residence. Firefighters were able to remove him from the structure, and Jackson County Emergency Medical Services and fire department personnel began lifesaving techniques.

The man was then transported to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, where he had a pulse and was breathing, Lucas said. He was then flown to Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis.

Lucas said the state fire marshal ruled that the fire was accidental and started near the couch in the living room, and it was contained to one room. As to what started the fire is still under investigation.

The man lived alone and rented through homeowner Sally Kulich, Lucas said.

Four firetrucks were on the scene, and firefighters were able to extinguish the flames in about 20 minutes but were on scene for four and a half hours due to the investigation.

Lucas said the fire caused about $150,000 in property damage.
