Seymour boys win home meet, while girls tie with Jennings County

When the final jump was made in the girls high jump at Bulleit Stadium on Thursday night, the Seymour and Jennings County girls tied, and the Seymour boys had defeated Jennings and Bedford North Lawrence in a triangular track and field meet.

The Seymour and Jennings girls each scored 66 points, and BNL had 33. The Seymour boys had 68 points, Jennings 58 and BNL 41.

The meet lasted four hours. All 53 members of the SHS girls team and all 59 members of the boys team were able to compete in at least one event. There were five heats in the girls 100, and 34 boys competed in the shot put.

Seymour girls coach Spencer Sunbury said the meet was a big turnaround over Tuesday’s meet at Columbus East.

“I saw a lot of consistency,” he said.

Boys coach Randy Fife said, “We kept the momentum going.”

The Seymour girls won seven individual events and the 1600 and 3200 relays.

Kiley Sons won the shot put with a throw of 31-10.5 and the discus with a throw of 96-8.

“Sons’ throws are better this year,” Sunbury said. “She has been working hard.”

In other field events, Sydney Montgomery was third in the high jump, Evah Snyder was second (13-10) and Kate Connell fourth in the long jump, Snyder was third in the pole vault and AnnMarie Shuler and Brylee Ramsey tied for fourth in the pole vault.

Anna Marks (53.64) was first and Jaidyn Nichols second (54.03) in the 300 hurdles, while Snyder was third (19.68) in the 100 hurdles.

Lorae Drake was third (19.68) in the 100, Kennedy Burnett was fourth (30.36) in the 200, l Montgomery won the 400 (1:03.13), Kelly Beavers was first (2:39) in the 800, Brooke Trinkle was first (5:36) and Shuler third (5:59) in the mile and Vivienne Siefker (12:06) won the 3200 and Kinsley Folsom (13:18) was fourth.

Beavers, Shuler, Siefker and Trinkle won the 3200 relay in 10:33, and Burnett, Ashlyn Henderson, Trinkle and Montgomery won the 1600 relay in 4:36.

“Sydney came back strong in the 400,” Sunbury said. “She looked good in the high jump and 400. Marks was really happy after the 300s. She looked good.”

Double winners for the Seymour boys were Jude Bane, Owen Kruse and Jaylan Johnson.

Bane won the mile in 4:39 and won the 3200 in 10:08, Kruse was first in the shot put at 44-0 and won the discus with a throw of 130-6 and Johnson won the 400 in 52.08 and the long jump at 20-5.

Seymour’s other individual first came from Michael Brooks in the 800 at 2:07.

Seymour scored three places in the discus and shot put. Evan Royer was second in the shot (42-10) and Curtis Burke was fourth at 39-4.5. Burke was second in the discus (125-3), and A.J. Harrell was fourth at 121-11.

Josh Rennekamp was second in the 400 at 53.67, Jesse Mellencamp was fourth in the 100 at 11.8, Kyle Hileman was third in the 200 at 24.58 and Carter Murphy was fourth in the 800 at 2:11.

Devon Jackson, Brooks, Rennekamp and Johnson teamed up to win the 1600 relay in 3:35.7.

Fife said, “I’m happy and a little surprised with our 400 and 800 runners. That shows our age and experience. We built off East. We’ve got work to do. We need to get more depth in the sprints.”

Seymour and Brown County will compete at Columbus North on Tuesday.
