Feeding the starving

Thumbs up to the 70 or so volunteers who spent the evening of March 28 packing 15,000 meals at Brownstown Christian Church. The meals will help Lifeline Christian Mission’s plan to pack and send 14 million meals this year to people around the world who are in danger of starving to death. According to the international relief agency Mercy Corps, around 9 million people around the world die of hunger annually. Brownstown Christian Church has been packing meals for such causes over most of the past decade.

Healthy hearts

Thumbs up to the more than 600 students at Margaret R. Brown Elementary School who participated in the annual Walk for Heart. The event, which started with Jump Rope for Heart at the Seymour school 30 years ago, raised $3,379.86 this year to support the American Heart Association in saving lives. Between the two programs over the years, students at the school have raised around $150,000 for the cause. A special thumbs up to the top three donors, Ryker Hunsucker, $500; Serenity Nixon, $341; and Aiden Hart, $212.86, and the others who raised more than $100: Darion Tatlock, Jillian Russell, Lucian Seville, Sarah Miller, Kevin BoJose, Brody Duggan, Noah Campos and Mark Perez Lopez.

Junior All-Star

Thumbs up to Brownstown Central High School junior Jack Benter, who is one of 18 players recently selected to the IndyStar Indiana Boys Junior All-Stars squad. The Junior All-Stars will play one game against the Kentucky Junior All-Stars on June 4 at Jeffersonville High School. They also will play one game against the Indiana All-Star seniors on June 7 at a site to be announced. Benter also was selected for the Future Games and will play for the South team.

No-no

Thumbs up to Seymour High School’s Bret Perry, who pitched a no-hitter in the Owls’ 15-0 victory on March 28 at cross-town rival Trinity Lutheran. Perry, a junior, gave up just one walk in the game or he would have had a perfect game.

Top coach

Thumbs up to Seymour native Teri Moren, who recently was named the AP National Coach of the Year after leading the Indiana Hoosiers women’s basketball team to a 28-4 record this season, its first Big Ten title in 40 years and first No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. Moren received 12 votes from the 28-member national media panel that votes on The Associated Press Top 25 each week during the season.
