Baseball

Owls win third straight

The Seymour baseball team went on the road to North Harrison on Tuesday night and picked up a 9-0 victory.

Braden Richey got the win on the mound for the Owls, and he, along with Jack VonDielingen and Gavin Leavy, combined to strikeout 14 batters. Richey had eight while the other two each had three.

Bret Perry, Jack VonDielingen, Vince Wilson, Treyton McCormick and Will Gray all got hits. Perry, VonDielingen and McCormick each had two runs while Skyler Cockerham, Gray and Jack Pennington each had one run. Perry and VonDielingen each had two RBI while Aiden Darlage had one.

Seymour is now 3-0 this season, outscoring opponents 39-2 thus far.

The Owls will be back home on Thursday against Columbus East.

Cougars beat Shiners

Trinity Lutheran scored three runs in the first inning and four runs in the third to defeat Rising Sun 9-3 at home Tuesday.

The Cougars also scored two runs in the sixth.

Trinity had seven hits with Drake Goodpaster leading the way with two singles, a double and he had four RBI and scored one run. Jackson Trueblood had a single and double, he scored two runs and had two RBI.

Kowan Gross and Nathan Finke had the other two hits, Nathan Voelker, Sage Broughton and Andrew Bell scored two runs each, and Cole Brewer, Broughton and Gross each had an RBI.

Gross pitched the first six innings and allowed three hits, three runs (one earned), to go with eight strike outs and four walks. Peyton Pollert pitched one inning and had one strike out and had one unearned run scored against him.

Trinity is 2-3 and will play at Crothersville at noon Saturday.

Softball

Braves fall at East

The Brownstown Central softball team went on the road to Columbus East on Tuesday and came up just short losing the Olympians 5-4.

Brownstown put up all four runs in the fourth inning.

Kyndle Huddleston had three hits, Brooke Meahl had two, Kelsey Schneider one, Olivia Justice one and Sophie Wayt one.

Justice’s hit was a grand slam to score Rylee May, Huddleston and Meahl.

Schneider pitched 6.2 innings for the Braves and had five strikeouts.

Brownstown is now 2-3 this season and will next play on Thursday at home against Eastern (Pekin).

Tennis

Owls win opener

The Seymour girls tennis team started its season with a 4-1 win at Jeffersonville on Tuesday night.

Brooke Schafstall beat Eva Ellis 5-7, 7-6 (9-7), 10-7 at No. 1 singles, Elise Hartung beat Abby Leep 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles and Jessica Hougland beat Anellha Trujilh 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

Seymour’s one doubles team Ava Sunbury and Addison Hunsley lost a tight match 7-6 (8-6), 5-7, 4-10, but Caroline Thompson and Ashley Clemente won 7-5, 6-3 at No. 2 doubles for Seymour.

The Owls (1-0) will open at home on Thursday against Columbus North.

Brownstown splits two matches

On Monday, the Brownstown Central girls tennis team started its season by beating Madison 5-0 at home.

Leah Pottschmidt won 6-2, 6-4 at one singles, Brynn Burton won 6-0, 6-1 at two singles, Avery Harrison won 6-0, 6-1 at three singles, Kaitlyn Williams and Bella Brown won 6-4, 7-5 at one doubles and Jenna Bolte and Audrey Scarlett won 6-4, 6-1 at two doubles.

The Braves then played at Charlestown on Tuesday night and suffered a 5-0 loss.

Pottschmidt lost 1-6, 2-6 at one singles, Burton lost 2-6, 0-6 at two singles, Harrison lost 3-6, 0-6 at three singles, Williams and Brown lost 2-6, 6-1, 4-6 at one doubles and Bolte and Scarlett lost 3-6, 1-6 at two doubles.

The Braves (1-1) will play at Salem on Thursday.

Cougars fall to Rebels

The Trinity Lutheran girls tennis team lost a tight match at home to Southwestern (Hanover) on Tuesday night 3-2.

Drew Hubbard won 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 at one singles, and Kiley Zabel and Carson Bowling won 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 at one doubles.

Siddha Hall lost 6-3, 2-6, 1-6 at two singles, Samantha Enzinger lost 2-6, 2-6 at three singles, and Natalee Martinez and Emily Keller lost 6-7 (5-7), 2-6 at two doubles.

Trinity (0-2) will play at home on Monday against Clarksville.

Golf

Owls beat Rebels

The Seymour boys golf team hosted Southwestern (Hanover) on Tuesday night at Shadowood and shot a 177 to win as Southwestern shot a 234.

Manny Fontanez shot a 41 to lead Seymour, followed by Noah Surface 43, Trevor Alberring 46, Luke Baker 47, Ty Stuckwisch 49 and Luke Fischer 54.

Trevor Goecker shot a 51, Eli Meyer 53, Zach Kriete 58, Paulton Rennekamp 61, Trent Morris 61 and and Brady Terrell 63.

The Owls will next compete in the Floyd Central Invite on Saturday.

Cougars take second at Salem

The Trinity Lutheran boys golf team shot a 221 at Salem on Tuesday to take second place. Salem was first with a 183 and Clarksville was third with a 248.

Jack Stuckwisch led the Cougars with a 48, followed by Wylie Jones with a 53, Solomon Hall 60 and Alex Overgaard 60.

The Cougars will be off until next Tuesday when they play at Jac-Cen-Del.

Track and field

Braves, Tigers compete at Austin

Brownstown Central and Crothersville competed at Austin on Tuesday for a boys and girls track and field meet.

The Brownstown boys won with a 97, Austin was second with 57 and Crothersville third with nine. The Brownstown girls won with 112, Austin second with 43 and Crothersville third with four.

First-place finishers for the Brownstown boys were Hudson Fritz in the 100 (11.78), Caleb Cummings in the 200 (24.40), Garrett Driver in the 400 (52.98), Isiaah Engle in the 110 hurdles (17.06), Roshaun Hehman in the 300 hurdles (51.27), Cummings in the high jump (5-2), Jaden Disque in the shot put (41-1.5) and Disque in the discus (120-1).

Brownstown’s 4×100 team of Cummings, Jack Pace, Fritz and Engle won in 45.47, and the 4×400 team of Driver, Gregory Hutcheson, Lane Zike and Engle won in 3:42.54.

For Crothersville boys, Will Ragan was third in the 100 (12.89), fourth in the 200 (27.77) and fourth in the 400 (59.45). Dirk Crater was fourth in the 800 (2:20.69), Baron Riley was third in the 300 hurdles (55.02) and Corey Reynolds was fourth in discus (87-1).

First-place finishers for the Brownstown girls were Maddy Schepman in the 100 (13.85) and 200 (29.32), Sophie Wischmeier in the 400 (1:10.79), Trinity Cody in the 3200 (14:34.21), Jocelyn Love in the 100 hurdles (17.76), Camryn Thompson in the 300 hurdles (53.79), Liberty Wilkins won high jump (4-8), Claire Schepman won pole vault (7-0), Hailey Bair won long jump (15-6.5) and Olivia Fritz won discus (89-4).

In the 4×100, Brownstown’s Hailey Bair, Schepman, Love and Thompson won in 54.09, and the Braves’ 4×400 team of Wischmeier, Noe McPherson, Love and Thompson won in 4:56.37.

Zoe Bowman was third in the 100 hurdles (20.04) and 300 hurdles (1:02.75), Morgan Womack was fifth in shot put (26-8) and Hali Burton was seventh in discus (58-6).

Brownstown and Crothersville will both race at home next Tuesday.

Owls results unavailable

The Seymour boys and girls track and field teams opened their respective season at Columbus East on Tuesday night, but results from the meet were unavailable at press time.
