Indiana Legal Help Kiosk to be installed at judicial center

A second Indiana Legal Help Kiosk will soon be installed in Jackson County.

Jackson Superior Court II Judge Bruce MacTavish received permission from county commissioners earlier this week for installation of that kiosk at the Jackson County Judicial Center, 109 S. Sugar St., Brownstown.

The first Indiana Legal Help Kiosk was installed earlier this year in the Jackson County Public Library’s main library at 303 W. Second St., Seymour.

MacTavish told commissioners during their meeting Tuesday morning at the courthouse that the second kiosk will be a freestanding unit and not a desk model, and he thinks the base of the stairwell at the judicial center would be a good place to install it. Commissioners agreed with that recommendation and also agreed to give MacTavish any available assistance the county might have available when the kiosk is installed.

Installation of the kiosk at the judicial center is tentatively scheduled for sometime in early to mid-April, said Craig Hayes, who is the bailiff for Jackson Superior Court II.

The kiosks provide a way for Hoosiers to easily access IndianaLegalHelp.org, an Indiana Bar Foundation program connecting Hoosiers to legal resources and services.

The website, which has seen more than a million visits since its launch, includes legal forms, instructional videos, referrals to free and low-cost legal services and a statewide calendar of free legal advice clinics.

The kiosks will initially focus on serving Hoosiers facing eviction or housing instability and will expand to include other legal topics later next year. The Americans with Disabilities Act-accessible kiosk has a printer and a scanner.

“We are so pleased to offer this wonderful resource to any member of our community. An Indiana Legal Help Kiosk at the Seymour Library means that more people can access legal information and resources, including those who don’t have reliable Internet or the ability to print or scan documents at home,” library Director Julia Aker said.

The Indiana Legal Help Kiosk is part of an initiative to place 120 kiosks in communities around the state. This opportunity is the result of a partnership between the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority and the Indiana Bar Foundation to increase housing stability legal services using federal funds made available through the Emergency Rental Assistance 2 Program.

“We are grateful to the organizations around the state that are partnering with us to make this valuable resource available in their community,” foundation President and CEO Charles Dunlap said. “Through IndianaLegalHelp.org and a network of statewide partners engaged in assisting Hoosiers facing housing-related civil legal issues, the foundation is uniquely positioned to expand services statewide and connect more Hoosiers with legal services.”

The Indiana Legal Help Kiosk at the library is available to the public from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday to Thursday, from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday. Hours for the new one at the judicial center will be 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
