Indy outdoors show tells all to find their adventure

INDIANAPOLIS — The 68th annual Indianapolis Boat, Sport and Travel Show, otherwise known as “the outdoors show” even though it is held indoors, is massive.

There are 750,000 square feet of exhibition space at the Indiana State Fairgrounds for the event that began last weekend and continues through Sunday. The show resumes Wednesday after a two-day hiatus.

While the sponsoring Renfro company claims this is the third largest gathering in Indiana annually behind the million people who attend the state fair and the 400,000 who attend the Indianapolis 500, spokesman Todd Jameson said the specific attendance total is “proprietary information.”

Essentially, the group doesn’t want to let competitors know how many people come. The show was idle for a cycle because of the COVID-19 pandemic but returned with a bang last year, and numbers are expected to be big again this year, Jameson said.

Outdoors enthusiasts in some cases were the least affected by COVID. They could still pursue activities in woods and on waters, go camping with family members and school-aged children had classes shut down, so they had free time.

“There was nothing else to do,” Jameson said.

The lingering carryover is that many were introduced to outdoor activities for the first time, and last February — and it is felt likely to continue — the newly stoked interest in nature and outdoor passions is being fed by shows like this one.

“We’re seeing a younger demographic,” Jameson said.

While many solo adults at the show were spotted browsing for new boats, recreational vehicles and equipment, such as fishing rods and articles of clothing, many youngsters were accompanying older relatives to check out the same goods.

A main theme of the show is “Find Your Adventure,” and booth after booth is staffed by people explaining offerings in camping, fishing and exploring getaways across Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee and exotic locations in Canada and even Alaska.

Show hours are noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, noon to 8 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The 25th Indiana Deer, Turkey and Waterfowl Expo from Thursday to Sunday is tied in. There are multiple fishing seminar speakers sprinkled throughout the show as well as hunting specialists giving talks.

Dan Armitage offers advice about kids’ fishing and Matt Firestein and Chae Dolsen on muskie fishing. There are several bass fishing experts.

Some hunting-related speakers include Jeff Foiles on duck and goose calling, Tony Mann of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources providing advice about tree stand safety and Byron Ferguson on trick archery.
