MEDORA — Medora Community School Corp. continues its effort in promoting responsibility, empathy and determination among its students by honoring its January R.E.D. Hornets of the Month during Monday’s board of school trustees meeting.

Those honored include senior Jayden Brown for his ability to show initiative and kindness in the classroom.

Junior Brooklynn Wilkerson was recognized for excelling in the classroom and being responsible as she is involved in many extracurriculars outside of the classroom, and eighth-grader Zachariah Day was honored for his kindness to those around him and willingness to help others.

Kara Hunt, principal of Medora Junior-Senior High School, introduced the honorees to trustees and read statements from their teachers.

Brown’s teachers praised him for his hardworking attitude and wished him continued success as he graduates this spring.

“Jayden has been a top agriculture student from my first day here. He excels and shows initiative with anything related to the greenhouse and garden beds,” agriculture teacher Adam Conklin wrote.

English/language arts teacher Rebecca Lanier said Brown is one of the kindest students she has ever had in her career.

Lanier also wrote about a time last year when Brown offered to repair a chair that a student had broken in her class by taking it to his welding class in Bedford to weld the arm back on it.

Lanier said she has seen progress in Brown, who has gone from truly disliking English to understanding what it takes to get a task completed and listening to feedback. Lanier said she has no doubt he will be successful in life after graduating from MHS.

“Jayden Brown is the student that says hi to you in the hallway every time you see him,” science teacher Leah Young wrote. “He is polite and always willing to help anyone.”

Social studies teacher Reuben Nehrt said he looks forward to seeing Brown in class every day and said he will miss Brown when he graduates this spring.

Wilkerson’s teachers recommended her because of her hard work inside and outside of the classroom.

“Brooklynn Wilkerson is much deserving of Hornet of the Month because she enjoys excelling at any task given to her, and she works hard to make sure she is doing everything she can both in school and out of school to meet her goals,” Lanier said. “We are definitely blessed to have Brooklynn as a student at MHS.”

Young wrote that Wilkerson is a great student with a kind heart and a joy to be around.

“Brooklynn is an absolute pleasure to have in geometry class,” math teacher Kyle Derheimer wrote. “Her hard work has really paid off this year. She has grown immensely and is one of my top students in geometry. Beyond math class, she is a model student and has her fingers in all sorts of extracurricular activities supporting her class.”

Nehrt said Wilkerson is a highly responsible person and is excellent with collaboration and networking.

“Brooklynn is an outstanding ag student and FFA member. She is also chapter president for this school year. She attended an FFA conference and was awarded a scholarship to attend,” Conklin said.

Day’s teachers honored him for his kindness and willingness to help others in school.

“Zach Day has a huge heart and strives to do better than the day before. He is willing to help others in need and is loyal to his friends,” Nehrt wrote.

Young said Day is a very sweet kid and helps others every day.

“Zach is a kind-hearted student who is always willing to help others. Zach always tries to do the right thing when given a difficult situation,” math and science teacher Angela Pritchett said.

Derheimer said Day is deserving of this honor because he demonstrates empathy and kindness to others and dedication toward his own growth.
