Three families lose home to fires in past week

Three fires within the past week have left families without a place to call home — at least for a while.

The most recent was reported at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at a rental home occupied by Seymour City Councilman Chad Hubbard, his wife, Randi Hubbard, and four other family members at 820 S. Pine St. in Seymour.

Hubbard said Friday a couple of family members were at home at the time of the fire but were able to get out without injury.

He said the Southeast Indiana Chapter of the American Red Cross helped put the family up at a local hotel for several days, but they are looking for a place to stay until the home, owned by Wehmiller Properties LLC, can be repaired.

Seymour Fire Chief Brad Lucas estimated the damage from the fire to be about $80,000.

“It started in the basement and got up into a wall,” Lucas said. “There was a whole lot of smoke damage.”

Hubbard said a lot of people have asked about helping out, and he plans to set up an account at First Financial Bank at 1130 E. Tipton St. They also may call him at 812-209-1241.

A fire Wednesday at a home at 1392 S. County Road 150W, Brownstown, rekindled Thursday evening, prompting a response by firefighters from Brownstown Fire Department. They were joined by personnel from Carr Township and Driftwood Township volunteer fire departments.

The home, owned by Jim and Mischell Ferguson, was heavily damaged by the initial fire reported at 12:20 p.m. Wednesday. The rekindle was reported shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday.

A third fire was reported at 12:01 a.m. Feb. 4 at a home at 3284 N. Sugar St., Clearspring.

Owen-Salt Creek Township Volunteer Fire Department Assistant Chief John Simmons said two men were in the home but were able to get out uninjured before firefighters arrived.

Simmons said the fire left the home with substantial damage. Firefighters from Brownstown Fire Department and Pershing Township Volunteer Fire Department assisted with the fire, which required water to be hauled from a water tower on Curry Road.

The last firefighters left that scene at 5 a.m. that day. The home is owned by John E. Mifflin and Leonard Dewayne Elkins.

Two men were able to escape injury from this fire, reported at 12:01 a.m. Feb. 4, at a home at 3284 N. Sugar St., Clearspring.
