CROTHERSVILLE — The Crothersville boys basketball team wanted to make sure they put on a good show for the newest class of the hall of fame Friday night.

After Cathy Sage, Rita Cook and Kevin Hensley were inducted into the school’s athlete hall of fame at halftime, the Tigers finished off Seven Oaks Classical School 62-44.

Coach Bryant Layman has seen his Tigers go 6-4 since Jan. 3 after they opened the season 1-6.

“Overall, we’re been really trying to get them to listen to the staff, trust our staff,” Layman said. “Trust what we’re doing and we’ll just see where we fall. We’ve hit a stretch where we’re a tough team to play right now. We know that, we’re confident with that. They’re just fun, they’re starting to believe in each other.

“When we put two guys that are great basketball players around guys that have never played before there is always going to be that apprehension. I think we knew we could be good, we knew we could be bad and I think we’re finally finding our stride.”

It was also senior night with senior players Will Ragan, Curtis Thompson and Preston West and their parents being introduced before the game.

Layman has coached them their junior and senior seasons. All three were in the starting lineup against Seven Oaks.

Layman said, “All three are relatively new to the program, relatively new to the team. Curtis came in in the sectional last year and this is his first year and he has been phenomenal. He’s been huge, a great asset, we’ve been lucky to have him.

“Same thing with Preston. He’s been a phenomenal addition late last year and all this year. Will had never played a day in his life. This is his first year. He scored some points tonight . That was big for us. Every senior is special.”

After the Firehawks took a 2-0 lead the Tigers scored the next 20 points to quickly take command.

Beau Napier had a hot hand early as he scored the Tigers’ first 11 points. On consecutive trips down the floor he hit a 3-pointer from the right corner and then nailed a 3-pointgeter form the left corner.

Thompson also stepped up with nine points in the opening period to help the team to a 25-6 lead going into the second period.

West came up with three baskets and two free throws in the second period, and Thompson added two more field goals as the Tigers increased their lead to 47-21 at the half.

A basket by West with 5:35 left in the third period put the Tigers up 56-21 resulting in a running clock for the rest of the game.

Napier topped the Tigers with 18 points, Thompson scored 17 and West 14. Lucas Hilton, Elijah Plasse and Dirk Crater scored three apiece, Ragan and Corey Kelshaw scored two apiece.

Noah Adams scored 23 for the Firehawks (1-9).

The Tigers held a 26-16 advantage in rebounds with Thompson grabbing eight and Lucas Hilton seven for the winners.

The Tigers (7-10) will go after a weekend sweep tonight when they host Union Dugger. The junior varsity game will start at 6 p.m.
