Friends and Neighbors club meets in Seymour

The Friends and Neighbors Home Extension Club met Jan. 24 at the Church Avenue Manor apartment of Helen Lutes.

Lutes explained the workings of independent apartment living and then the nine members and three husbands proceeded to the new Walnut Street Manor Apartments, where Delmar Kloeker conducted a tour of the amenities of the complex, including his own two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment.

The group ended the tour in the Common Tree Café with President Ruby Niccum opening the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and the club creed. The husbands and Kloeker returned to Lutes’ apartment to play cards.

Devotional leader Ruth Bateman used the daily devotion from “Jesus Always.” She commented on the fact that each day’s devotion always seems to fill that day. Niccum said she has been reading Sarah Young devotions for six or seven years and has found that to be true.

Bateman said all of Young’s writings are written with Jesus as the first person.

Lutes read the minutes, and treasurer Donna Abner reported on the club’s financial account.

Vera Robbins gave a lesson on volunteering. She pointed out there are many opportunities and you get more out of it than you put in.

Abner continued and listed several Indiana Extension Homemakers Association projects such as the Backpack Program, Coins for Friendship, Ronald McDonald House, Military Heroes, Nickels for Leadership and Riley Hospital for Children.

She also shared suggestions for county and local clubs to partner with other organizations to better meet needs and do fundraisers and/or collect monetary contributions for a cancer research endowment and other worthy causes. Abner also said clubs could participate in community or volunteer with meal programs, soup kitchens, food pantries, clothing bank, shelters or volunteer at long-term care facilities, hospitals and mental health facilities.

Niccum reminded everyone about the spring district meeting March 21 to be held at Cornerstone Community Church in Seymour and that the club is responsible for setup. Niccum distributed a copy of a poem entitled “On Friendship.”

The next meeting will be Feb. 28 at the residence of Antonia Rodriquez.

Niccum closed the meeting reminding everyone to turn in their volunteer information to Abner before Feb. 1.
