Dudleytown Mets end Sauers E 26-game winning streak

On Monday, league-leading Sauers E visited Dudleytown Mets.

Sauers had a record of 33-3 and a 26-game winning streak. In the first game, Sauers E easily handled the Mets 10-3. In the second game, the Mets got hot and won 12-1. In the third game, both teams were struggling to score. Sauers E held a 1-0 lead until the bottom of the eighth inning when the Mets scored twice to win the rubber game 2-1.

Wegan W had the hottest hands, scoring 7, 18 and 8 to sweep Redeemer N and move up to second place. Immanuel 1 swept Zion 2 to move up to third place. The second-place team, White Creek N, was swept by Wegan C and fell to fourth place.

Hayden Methodist had the cold hands, as they could only score a total of two runs and lost all three games to Dudleytown D.

An interesting note from the match between the Pastors and Immanuel Darty. In the second game, Darty’s first seven batters got a single, a triple, a single, an out, an out, a triple and an out. Just a pretty good inning for Darty scoring three runs. The interesting part happened in the fifth inning when the same seven batters got the same results — a single, a triple, a single, an out, an out, a triple and an out. What are the odds of that happening twice in the same game?

Dartball history: With the threat of snow accumulation in southern Indiana, only twice has the league been halted. During the winter of 1977-78, the country was experiencing a severe energy crisis. Some might be old enough to remember the large snowfall that winter. One could drive on country roads with one lane open and snow drifts more than 8 feet high on both sides of the road.

If you met another vehicle, someone would have to back up to the nearest crossroads to allow passing. On Feb. 28, 1978, the league captains met at the home of Henry Bobb, league president, to discuss the situation. The league voted to halt play on that night for the remainder of the schedule. This would allow churches to not have to heat their annexes for dartball.

The last five weeks of the schedule were canceled. Wegan S was leading the league at that time and was awarded first place. Redeemer N was in second place and was awarded that trophy. The league tournament was held as scheduled on March 20, 1978, at the armory with Zion being victorious and Wegan S as runner-up.

The second time the league halted play was the 2020-21 season. In January 2020, the world was introduced to COVID-19. The number of people being infected and dying continued to grow week to week. Restaurants and businesses were closing their doors, and the public was introduced to wearing masks to control the spread of the virus.

In the fall of 2020, the captains met and decided not to play dartball for the 2020-21 season until the government could get control of COVID.

In the fall of 2021, the league voted to resume play.
