North Vernon police have made a second arrest in connection with two threats made Thursday at Jennings County High School.

The arrest of a female juvenile occurred after high school staff received information at 10:58 a.m. Monday about the bomb threat, which had been sent by an iPhone AirDrop to the school, according to a news release from Sgt. Isaac Barkes.

AirDrop allows iPhone owners and owners of other Apple products to transfer files wirelessly with the owners of Apple products if they are in close range.

Barkes, the public information officer for the North Vernon Police Department, said the information about the bomb threat was relayed to School Resource Officer Matt Staples, who talked to the girl in his office with her parents present.

With the aid of statements from high school staff and the youth, Staples was able to substantiate probable cause that led to the juvenile’s arrest, Barkes said.

She was later interviewed by North Vernon Police Department detectives Wes Thayer and Craig Kipper at the police station with a parent present. The juvenile admitted to sending the AirDrop threat in the cafeteria, Barkes said.

With the aid of Jennings County Juvenile Probation, the juvenile was later transported to a juvenile detention facility and faces a Level 5 felony charge of intimidation.

The iPhone used in the incident was seized for digital evidence preservation and discovery, Barkes said. The investigation is ongoing.

At 4:23 p.m. Friday, a juvenile was arrested on a Level 5 felony charge of intimidation in connection with a second AirDrop threat involving a gun.

During that investigation, Barkes said numerous tips and information from students and staff in addition to video surveillance footage led to numerous interviews and phones being seized in relation to the offenses.

The information received ultimately led to the juvenile suspect, who was interviewed Friday at the police department. A voice stress analysis also was conducted by Andy Judd, a juvenile probation officer.

During the interview, Barkes said the juvenile provided a verbal admission to one of the AirDrops sent Thursday and also provided photo/electronic evidence of the crime.

Intimidation arrest

Earlier in the day Monday, Staples was contacted by high school staff regarding another incident that had occurred earlier in the morning.

Barkes said at about 8:36 a.m., a student reported to staff that another student had made an intimidating statement causing concern for the safety of the school, Barkes said.

The statement was reported to have been said on high school property by a student walking to school from a school bus.

That student was soon identified and escorted out of his classroom.

School staff conducted a search of the student’s backpack in front of Staples, but nothing of note was located, Barkes said.

Staples detained the juvenile, and parents were contacted. The juvenile was interviewed and later gave a verbal admission to making the statement. With the aid of Jennings County Juvenile Probation, the juvenile was arrested and taken to a juvenile detention facility.

Police are encouraging parents and guardians to discuss the severity of their children’s statements and actions.
