Purdue Extension Jackson County is offering a Youth Mental Health First Aid course for anyone who serves youth in Jackson County from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 20 at the Brownstown Central Community School Corp. administration building, 608 W. Commerce St., Brownstown.

The Jackson County Health Department is sponsoring the free training for attendees, a $130 value.

The course is designed to teach adult participants how to help a youth who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis; the signs and symptoms for a variety of mental health disorders, such as anxiety, depression, substance use trauma and deliberate self-injury; awareness and understanding of the impact mental health and substance use stigma can have; and how to assist those in need to get help from a health professional.

The training includes two hours of online self-paced learning and six hours of live instruction. Participants must complete the online self-paced learning at least 48 hours before attending the live instruction. There is a requirement that participants attend and participate in all course content and activities to be certified in Youth Mental Health First Aid.

Registration is required by Feb. 6. Use the code HDSponsor when you register to receive the training. Register online at cvent.me/vaNXlo.
