Town applying for road funding

BROWNSTOWN — The Brownstown Town Council plans to pursue $1 million in state funding for the repaving of four streets this spring.

Council members discussed the Community Crossings Matching Grant Program with engineer Bernie Hauersperger with FPBH Inc. in Seymour during Monday night’s council meeting at the town hall.

Hauersperger outlined the four projects the town would complete if its grant application is successful. That application calls for a $346,627 match from the town. The program, established in 2016, requires cities and town with populations of less than 10,000 to provide a match of at least 25%.

If awarded funding, the repaving projects to be completed would be Sugar Street from Hoosier Christian Village to Commerce Street (State Road 250), Bloomington Road from Commerce Street to Asher Street, Vallonia Road from Main Street to the town limits and Indiana Street from Poplar Street to Sugar Street.

Hauersperger said the Indiana Street project would likely be one of the more expensive projects per foot because it runs in front of McDonald’s restaurant.

“We’ll probably have to do that one at night,” he said.

Street Superintendent Shawn Ross said he was good with the list of projects when asked that question by Councilwoman Sharon Koch.

Hauersperger said the grant application is due at 5 p.m. Jan. 27. The council, which voted 3-0 to pursue the grant, plans to hold a special meeting at noon today to finalize its part of the application process, including approving an updated Americans with Disabilities Act plan.

After the meeting, Hauersperger said Brownstown’s chance of obtaining a grant is good since it had not applied for one in a few years.

The program is a partnership between the Indiana Department of Transportation and communities across the state to invest in infrastructure projects to create economic development, create jobs and strengthen local transportation networks.

Since 2016, the state has awarded more than $1 billion in state funds to support local road and bridge projects throughout Indiana. INDOT holds two Community Crossings Matching Grant calls for projects each year, one in January and one in July.
