Seymour seniors Nicole Rebber and Aaron Drake said it was a special feeling to be introduced before Thursday’s Senior Night swimming and diving meet against Columbus East in the SHS pool.

Rebber, along with other Lady Owls Katya Cox, Karsen Reasoner, Kate Connell and Grace Lewis and their parents, were introduced, then went out helped their teammates defeat East 119-67.

Drake, along with senior boys Grant Smith, Alex Landes, Kaleb Brown and Paul Montgomery and their parents, were also honored prior to the meet that was won by East 109-74.

Seymour head coach Dave Boggs said he has enjoyed coaching this group of seniors.

“Like with every class, we rely on them for their leadership and their guidance for the younger athletes and to carry on the tradition we have here at Seymour,” he said.

He said the five senior girls and five senior boys is about the average number of seniors he has each winter.

“We lose a good number every year, but we always seem to replace them with incoming swimmers and divers. We just kind of reload every year, which is nice,” Boggs said.

“It’s a fun night, and we have a really nice questionnaire we give them, kind of a little bit of everything if you will, a montage,” he continued. “It really shows even our own teammates and our own fans and all what their really into, their favorite restaurants or music, movies, everything. So it’s nice to learn a little bit more about them.”

Both Rebber and Drake competed in two individual events and two relays against East.

Rebber, a member of the swim team for three years, swam the medley relay, 100 free, 200 free relay and 100 breast.

“I’m kind of happy it’s over,” she said after winning her heat in the breaststroke. “It’s a long season. It’s going to be weird that it’s over, but I’m happy to have free time.”

She said athletes have reduced their morning practices from three per week to one per week, and they have begun their taper in preparation for the Floyd Central Sectional Feb. 2 and 4.

“I’ve enjoyed the competitiveness of swimming,” she said.

Drake said he has swam four years for the Owls, and he competed in the 50 and 100 freestyles, 200 free relay and 400 free relay.

“The 200 free relay is my favorite relay, for sure,” he said and added that he likes the shorter races better.

“I’ve definitely enjoyed the team aspect,” he said. “You get to know everybody here really well.”

He said senior night, “For everybody that doesn’t know you, they know you now. They know what you want to do. It was absolutely a fun night. Right now, the boys are doing a soft taper. In a week, we’re going to do our full taper.”

The Seymour girls won all three relays, Addy Castetter won the 100 butterfly and 200 IM, Katya Cox won the 50 free and 100 free and Makenna Greenawalt won the 100 breast.

Montgomery won the 50 free and 100 free, and the Seymour boys won the 400 free relay.

Earlier this week on Tuesday, the Seymour girls beat Bedford North Lawrence 115-68, while the boys lost a close meet 92-88.

The girls are now 12-2 this season, while the boys are 10-4.

The girls will host Providence and Henryville Monday night, and the boys will prepare for the Hoosier Hills Conference meet Jan. 26 and 28 at Floyd Central.
