Medora gets to semifinal at Southern Roads

The Medora boys basketball team hosted the Southern Roads Conference Tournament over the weekend, and the Hornets got off to a good start with a 41-35 win over Madison Christian on Friday night.

Braxton McCory led the Hornets with 16 points on the night, Eli Sturgill had nine, Shepard Earl eight, Dawson Cornett three, Eli Lane three, Jaxon Nugen one and Hudson Johnson one.

The win advanced Medora to the semifinal round on Saturday morning, where they took on Pleasant View Christian.

Pleasant View Christian got the best of Medora and advanced to the championship game on Saturday night against Bloomington Lighthouse, who beat Columbus Christian 94-30 in the second semifinal game.

Lighthouse defeated Pleasant View in the finals 58-54, winning the Southern Roads Conference.

Medora (4-6) will next play at West Washington on Tuesday and then at Trinity Lutheran on Friday.

Trinity loses tight game

The Trinity Lutheran boys basketball team had a close loss at New Washington on Saturday night.

The Cougars, fresh off a home win Friday night against Shawe Memorial, played another good game at the Mustangs on Saturday. New Washington got the win 69-63.

Kowan Gross led Trinity in scoring with 20 points, Kole Shewmaker scored 14, Levi Pottschmidt had 11, Eli Ballard 10, Luke Coomler six and Peyton Pollert two.

Trinity is now 2-9 this season and will host Rising Sun on Tuesday night.

Girls basketball

Center Grove edges out Seymour

The Seymour girls basketball suffered a two-point road loss to Center Grove on Saturday afternoon 37-35.

Kendall Sterling scored 15 points to lead the way for the Owls, followed by Brooke Trinkle with 10, Journee Brown six and Claire Marshall four.

The Owls trailed 16-13 after the first quarter, led 23-21 at halftime, trailed 31-29 at the end of the third and that remained the deficit when the clock hit triple zeros as both teams scored six points each in the fourth quarter.

Seymour (12-6) will host Jeffersonville on Tuesday and Franklin on Thursday this week.

Braves drop game to Panthers

The Brownstown Central girls basketball team played at home on Saturday afternoon against a tough Jennings County team, and the Panthers came away with a 47-38 victory.

The Braves are now 14-6 this season and will next play at Bloomington North on Tuesday night.

Tigers fall at Dugger

The Crothersville girls basketball team was back in action on Saturday for a game at Dugger Union.

The Bulldogs got the best of the Tigers, winning the game 49-32.

Hali Burton had a big game for the Tigers, scoring 20 points on the afternoon, including five 3-pointers.

Morgan Womack and Kendall Berry both scored six, and Ally Mendoza scored two.

Crothersville is now 0-13 this season with a home game against Medora scheduled for tonight at 6 p.m.

Wrestling

Seymour places fifth at HHC

The Seymour wrestling team had a fifth-place finish at the Hoosier Hills Conference meet at Columbus East on Saturday.

Columbus East won with 261.5 points, Floyd Central was second at 242, Jeffersonville third 199, Jennings County fourth at 148, Seymour had 146, New Albany 125.5 and Bedford North Lawrence 70.

Three Owls had second-place finishes, and those were Dane Botkin at 120, Logan Cunningham at 182 and Brenden Bridgewater at 220.

Botkin (18-4) won by 5-2 decision over Floyd’s Aiden Stephenson before falling to East’s Gage Rutan in the first-place match. Cunningham (17-8) pinned Jennings County’s Sam Hernandez before losing to Floyd’s Bray Emerine in the first-place match. Finally, Bridgewater (19-13) won by a 7-0 decision over Floyd’s Kenny Ward. East’s Tommy Morrill topped Bridgewater in the first-place match.

Briley Compton placed third for Seymour at 160. Fourth-place finishers consisted of Charlie Bruce (160), Liam Chandler (113), Ricky Bogard (126) and Mason Nugent (170). Chase Rogers (138) and Jesus Aguilar (285) were both fifth in their respective weight classes, and Nic Frady (145) was sixth place. Sam Chandler (152) wound up sixth after suffering an injury.

Seymour will compete against Jennings County on Thursday before preparing for the sectional on Jan. 28
