County BZA approves outdoor wedding venue; two more proposed

The Jackson County Board of Zoning Appeals recently approved a special exception that allows a Brownstown couple to operate an outdoor wedding and reception venue at their home.

The request from Nathan and Angela Patman, 776 S. County Road 100W, initially came during the December meeting of the BZA, but it was tabled to give the five-member board time to review it after some residents of the area expressed concerns.

County Building Commissioner Conner Barnette said the Patmans’ request was approved during Tuesday’s BZA meeting. The special exception allows for operation of the venue in an area zoned residential.

According to their application, filed Oct. 25 with the county office of planning and zoning, the Patmans said they had recently purchased the operations of Pewter Hall Banquet Facility and would like to offer their 10.05-acre property as an option for customers of that venue moving forward. Pewter Hall is located near the Patmans’ residence at 850 W. Sweet St., Brownstown.

In a related matter, the Jackson County Plan Commission will meet at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and review two new requests that if approved would allow for outdoor weddings, receptions and private events at residences. That meeting will be held at the Jackson County Courthouse, 111 S. Main St., Brownstown.

Tiffany Johnson, 351 S. U.S. 31, Seymour, is the first applicant petitioning for a special exception to hold outdoor weddings, receptions and private events at her residence.

The 10.7-acre property lies in an agriculture zoning district. No permanent structures will be built. The site already includes a home and accessory buildings, including separate guest quarters, a pool house and exterior restrooms, according to Johnson’s application. The land is owned by the Dana P. Myers Revocable Trust.

Catherine Kick with Z & R Farms LLC also is petitioning for a special exception to host outdoor weddings, receptions and small events from an existing accessory building at 948 S. County Road 350E, Brownstown.

There is a proposed structure on this 95-acre land that will be used for events. This land also is currently in an agricultural zoning district.

After receiving the requests, the nine-member plan commission can either give them favorable, unfavorable or no recommendation before forwarding them to the BZA for final approval.
