The Seymour Community School Corp. board of education recently reorganized for the year.

During Tuesday night’s meeting, three board members were sworn in by Jackson Circuit Judge Richard W. Poynter: John Kelley, Max Klosterman and Joe Tormoehlen.

Superintendent Brandon Harpe called the reorganization meeting to order, and the first order of duty was to elect the board of officers.

The officers voted in were president, Art Juergens; vice president, Ken Browning; and secretary, John Kelley.

Other members serving on the board are Tormoehlen, Klosterman and newcomer Holly Coates. Coates took part in a different swearing-in ceremony in December, which included many of the newly elected officials.

December was the last meeting for two board members: Jeff Joray and Nancy Franke.

During that meeting, Harpe announced Joray had been elected as the Jackson Township trustee and would begin his term this month.

“During his tenure, he worked with three superintendents and has been a part of a board that has done over $80 million of tax-neutral construction,” Harpe said. “Jeff is also retiring from the Boys & Girls Club, and we wish him luck as the new Jackson Township trustee.”

He said Franke was elected as the Seymour city at-large representative and began her first term in 2010.

“She has worked with five superintendents and like Jeff has been a part of over $80 million of tax-neutral construction within our school district,” Harpe said. “Nancy has served for several years as the liaison between our local board and the Indiana School Boards Association.”

He said both of the outgoing board members, along with the rest of the board, also served during one of the most tumultuous times in our nation, the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Nancy has also served as the vice president of our board the last few years,” Harpe said. “Nancy, thank you for your time and dedication to our board over the last 12-plus years.”

Also during the meeting, the following trustees were appointed to committees:

Indiana School Boards Association legislative liaison — Browning

ISBA policy liaison — Browning

Board of finance — Juergens, Browning and Kelley

Board development and training — Tormoehlen

School farm and vocational advisory board — Klosterman

A special board meeting will be held Tuesday to appoint someone to fill Joray’s vacancy. The appointee will complete the seven-person board and will finish out the two years left of Joray’s term.
