Hobson’s late 3 lifts Braves past Pirates 47-43

BROWNSTOWN — Brownstown freshman Hailey Hobson only scored three points in Thursday night’s game against Greensburg, but her one field goal was the biggest of the night.

Trailing by one, Kalee Borden got into the paint and was swarmed by the Pirates’ defense. Borden kicked it out to the right corner to Hobson, who drilled a 3-pointer with 30 seconds left to put the Braves up two.

That shot propelled Brownstown to defeat Greensburg 47-43.

“What an unselfish play,” head coach Brandon Allman said. “The play was for Kalee to make a play, and she did. She kicked it out to a freshman, who was in there for defensive purposes and she didn’t hesitate, and that’s what you want. It was a huge shot. Play of the game for us.”

After Hobson made the three, Brownstown committed a foul and sent Greensburg’s Mary Harmon to the free throw line. She missed the front end, and Camryn Thompson grabbed the rebound. Thompson then stepped up to the line with 10 seconds left and made both free throws to put the Braves out in front by four to secure the win.

Thompson had seven points for the Braves and worked hard on the defensive end guarding 6-foot-1 Leah West.

“She had a heck of a game,” Allman said. “That’s one the top games she’s had as a varsity basketball player for us. She just does so many things for us defensively. She’s giving up height and the way she is able to battle and compete and run the floor, it was great.”

After scoring just 28 total points in its last outing, Brownstown came out and really pushed the pace offensively. The Braves got into their actions and created some easy backdoor layups and open 3-pointers.

“We were running our stuff, got a couple buckets in transition and then we got easy baskets running our sets,” Allman said.

It was 7-2 in favor of Brownstown before Greensburg started to get West going.

Brownstown took a 13-9 lead at the end of the first quarter, and a 3-pointer from Kelsey Schneider put Brownstown up 19-14 midway through the second quarter.

But turnovers really hurt the Braves and allowed the Pirates to hold them scoreless the rest of the quarter and even things up at 19 by halftime.

“We didn’t get enough stops on the defensive end,” Allman said. “We had 16 turnovers, and our goal is to have less than 12. About five or six of those were travels, and we can’t have those.”

West had 11 points at the break for Greensburg while Schneider led Brownstown with six points — one layup, one 3-pointer and one free throw.

Greensburg was content to let Schneider shoot from the perimeter, and the Brownstown guard made them pay, nailing consecutive triples in the third quarter to put the Braves up 30-26.

“You can’t say enough about Kelsey Schneider,” Allman said. “That was her best game as a high school basketball player. She shot the ball with confidence. They were leaving her open, and she made them pay.”

But the Pirates wouldn’t go away. Aly Powers made a layup with 42 seconds left in the quarter to give Greensburg its first lead of the game.

Powers hit a floater to beat the buzzer to give Greensburg a 36-33 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

After not hitting a field goal in the first three quarters, Borden came up with a huge steal to put the Braves up 39-38 with two minutes to go.

“Our scoring was really balanced,” Allman said. “That steal she was able to get at half-court was huge for us.”

There was a controversial out of bounds call that didn’t go the Braves’ way, and Greensburg took advantage. Carlee Adams hit a 3-pointer to put Greensburg up four points with 1:30 to play.

But the Braves didn’t flinch or complain. They responded by getting Maddy Hackman an open look from three that she knocked down to draw the deficit back down to one.

Brownstown later got a steal on an inbounds pass, and that’s when Hobson hit the go-ahead shot.

“That’s something we talk about all the time is controlling with what you can control,” Allman said. “We can’t control what the officials call, but we can control how we react to it. I really like how we reacted tonight.”

Schneider led the way for the Braves with 12 points, Hackman scored eight, Borden and Thompson each had seven, Jenna Klosterman had six, Hobson three, and Harley Toppe and Addison Darlage both scored two.

After West scored 11 at the break for Greensburg, the Braves held her to just four in the second half for 15 total. Powers and Harmon each scored 11 for the Pirates and Adams had six.

The win improves Brownstown’s record to 14-5 this season, and the Braves have some tough games coming up, starting with Jennings County at home on Saturday afternoon.

“I just want to see us continue to get tougher,” Allman said. “Just battle and not have as many breakdowns defensively. I do feel like we were on the ground more tonight than we have been, which is a sentiment to how I want our team to play like.”
