Owls get first win in OT

The Seymour boys basketball team got its first win of the season on Tuesday night at Whiteland, and the Owls needed more than four quarters to do it.

Seymour put together clutch buckets to defeat Whiteland 57-54 in overtime.

Seymour was down two points with 35 seconds left, and Eli Meyer hit a jumper 10 seconds later to tie the game up.

Whiteland called timeout with 13 seconds to play, the game tied at 47. The Owls were able to come up with a big stop to force overtime.

Bret Perry opened the extra period with a 3-pointer to put the Owls out in front 50-47.

Seymour was able to maintain the lead the rest of the way. Missed free throws almost hurt the Owls down the stretch, but Seymour held on for the three-point victory.

Landon Fritsch had 20 points to lead the team on the night. Eli Meyer scored 12 points, Bret Perry had 11, Jaylan Johnson scored eight, and Charlie Longmeier and Josh Rennekamp both had three points.

“The one thing through this month is we’ve had guys continue to come to practice and not pout and work hard,” Seymour head coach Kirk Manns said. “What you saw at the end of the game was the last six games start to creep into their minds, but we found a way this time. When you find a way (to win) the first time, it might get easier the second time.”

Seymour, now 1-6 this season, will play in a week when the Owls host New Albany next Tuesday in Lloyd E. Scott Gymnasium.

Seymour falls at Greensburg

The Seymour girls basketball team went on the road to Greensburg on Tuesday night but couldn’t come away with the win as the Owls dropped the game 75-64.

It was actually Seymour’s best scoring output on the season, but the Owls just couldn’t keep pace with the Pirates.

Journee Brown added 21 points for the Owls, scoring 18 of those in the paint and making three from the charity stripe.

Brooke Trinkle scored seven, Greer Henry had five, Jaidyn Nichols had three and Claire Marshall had two.
