Immanuel Lutheran eighth-graders win SMS Invite

The Immanuel Lutheran eighth grade boys basketball team had another successful weekend, this time competing in the Seymour Middle School Invitational.

The Warriors played in three games and won each one to become champions of the SMS Invite.

In the first round, Immanuel Lutheran was matched up against Lutheran Central. The Warriors were able to come out on top 48-23 to advance.

Carter Stein led the team in scoring with 17 points. Stein also had four assists and two rebounds.

Braxton Sinclair scored 10 points, Reed Mellencamp had eight, Jude Michael scored two, Bryson Baker scored two, Eli Tempest scored two, Jack Mellencamp scored two, Oliver Williams scored two, Stephen Trager scored two and Jackson Fox scored one point. Although not scoring, Lane Kleber had two rebounds and one assist.

In the semifinals, Immanuel Lutheran took on host school Seymour. The Warriors were able to come away with a 16-point victory, 52-36, to advance to the title game.

Against Seymour, Stein once again led the way with 19 points, two rebounds and two assists. Reed Mellencamp and Sinclair each contributed 11 points, Michael scored nine and Jack Mellencamp scored two. Tempest grabbed five boards, Kleber had one rebound and Trager had one assist.

In the championship game, Immanuel Lutheran battled against Brownstown Central Middle School. This was a single digit game, but the Warriors were able to claim the 43-34 victory.

Reed Mellencamp was the top scorer in this game with 13 points. He also added seven boards and two assists. Michael scored 11, Sinclair had eight, Stein scored seven and Tempest scored four. Jack Mellencamp added three rebounds as well.

This is the second tournament the Warriors have won in the past month. They won the Indianapolis Lutheran Tournament in the middle of November as well.

With the wins over the weekend, Immanuel Lutheran is now up to 8-1 on the season.
