Two Jackson County residents have been charged in connection with the Nov. 25 burglary and theft of items from a storage unit in Seymour.

Joseph A. Cottey, 37, of Seymour and Kyia Nicole Esteb-Stephens, 30, of Medora each face charges of burglary and possession of stolen property in connection with the incident reported at Ogle’s Storage, 1907 N. Ewing St., according to a news release from Jackson County Sheriff Rick Meyer.

The incident was investigated by county Officer Mark Holt, who initially responded to the burglary report and was able to obtain descriptions of a male suspect and a female suspect, Meyer said.

He said Holt also was able to obtain a description of a vehicle involved in the incident, and a vehicle matching that description was located Nov. 26 on Shields Avenue in Seymour.

Cottey was located near the vehicle and later admitted his involvement in the incident, while Esteb-Stephens was located at her home in Medora, Meyer said.

Items recovered from the burglary, including totes, fishing poles, golf clubs and baseball cards were processed and returned to the owner, he said.

Meyer said investigators were able to determine Cottey and Esteb-Stephens were able to get into the ceiling of an empty storage unit and crawl to the unit they wanted to burglarized. Esteb-Stephens then kicked a ceiling panel loose in one of the units to get into the burglarized unit.

County officers Justin Amos and Aaron Wilkins assisted with the investigation and arrests of Cottey and Esteb-Stephens.

Jackson Circuit Court Judge Richard W. Poynter set bond at $1,500 Wednesday for both Cottey and Esteb-Stephens dureing their initial hearings. He also set their trial dates for 8:30 a.m. May 16 in Jackson Circuit Court.
