Braves beat defending state champs

The Brownstown Central boys basketball team had a potential sectional preview game to open its 2022-23 season as the Braves played at defending 2A state champs Providence on Saturday night.

Brownstown grabbed a lead from the beginning, and although the game stayed close the rest of the way, the Braves never relinquished the advantage on the scoreboard, winning the game 81-71.

Jack Benter led Brownstown in scoring with 29 points on the night. Colby Hall contributed 14, Chase Coomer had 13, Parker Hehman 10, Carson Darlage five, Adam Stahl three, Caiden Gwin three, Micah Sheffer two and Jakob Arthur two.

The Braves (1-0) will play at Salem on Tuesday night.

Crothersville drops game to Orleans

The Crothersville boys basketball team had its home opener on Saturday night, welcoming in the Bulldogs of Orleans, but it was the visiting team that walked away with the victory, 64-41.

Preston West led the Tigers in scoring with 23 points on the night. Lucas Hilton scored eight, Curtis Thompson scored five, Beau Napier three and Dirk Crater scored two.

Crothersville is now 0-2 to start the year and will look for its first win this Friday at home against Cannelton.

Girls basketball

Trinity wins third straight

The Trinity Lutheran girls basketball team put together its third consecutive victory on Saturday night after defeating Southwestern (Shelby) 73-41 at home.

Bailey Tabeling led the way with 28 points, while Liza Froedge scored 21 and Madison Keith scored 17 to lead the Cougars in scoring.

Trinity is now 3-1 and will host Edinburgh on Thursday.

Crothersville falls on road

The Crothersville girls basketball team suffered a 56-42 loss at Columbus Christian on Saturday night.

JoJo Clay led Crothersville with a double-double of 16 points and 16 rebounds. Hayden Pilgrim scored 12 points, Hali Burton had eight, Kendall Berry scored four and Morgan Womack had two.

The Tigers, now 0-5 this season, will return home for back-to-back home games against Switzerland County and Cannelton this Thursday and Friday.
