Jackson County boys basketball set to tip off this week

This week marks the official start for high school boys basketball in Indiana.

All five teams in Jackson County will kick off their season this week. Seymour, Crothersville, Trinity Lutheran and Medora all open their respective seasons on the road on Tuesday night, and Brownstown Central waits until after Thanksgiving to start its season on Saturday.

Seymour Owls

The Seymour boys team is coming off of a solid season a year ago. The Owls finished 15-7, the program’s best mark since the 2006-07 season. The 15 regular-season victories were Seymour’s best showing since the 1987-88 season.

Seymour has a strong senior class in Landon Fritsch, Charlie Longmeier, Josh Rennekamp, Eli Meyer, Cory Robinson and Evan Smith.

They also will rely on big contributions from players like Bret Perry, Michael Brooks, Ethan Silcox, Jaylan Johnson, A.J. Harrell, Brady Harpe and Seth Montgomery.

They are led by Kirk Manns, who is in his fourth year at the helm.

Seymour opens the season Tuesday night at Corydon Central and will play its first game in the Lloyd E. Scott Gymnasium on Saturday when they host Columbus North.

Brownstown Central Braves

The Braves are coming off of a really solid season in which they won a sectional championship and took eventual 3A state champion Beech Grove to the absolute limit in the regional semifinal.

Brownstown had an impressive 22-4 record and also won a share of the Mid-Southern Conference.

They will be led by junior and Purdue basketball commit Jack Benter, who averaged a school record 26.9 points per game last season.

Brownstown also returns starters Parker Hehman and Carson Darlage from last season. Darlage is a senior along with Jakob Arthur and Bryce Neal. The Braves also expect big contributions from Scottsburg transfers Chase Coomer and Colby Hall.

Dave Benter starts his 25th year this season, and he has a record of 425-157.

The Braves open their season Saturday at Providence, which won the 2A state title last year. Brownstown is now in 2A this season.

Brownstown’s first home game won’t come until Dec. 2 against cross-county rival Seymour.

Trinity Lutheran Cougars

Trinity head coach Brad Dickey is in his second season now leading the Cougars.

Last year, the team went 9-15 but started to play strong basketball down the stretch.

The Cougars lost a strong senior class, but they have a good young core. Seniors on the roster are Levi Froedge, Eli Ballard and Luke Coomler.

They will rely on juniors like Levi Pottschmidt, Peyton Pollert, Kowan Gross, Charlie Hackman, Josh Conrad and Evan Christopher.

Trinity also has nine freshmen and sophomores who will continue to be good building blocks for the future.

The Cougars open up their season at South Decatur on Tuesday night. Their first home game won’t be until Dec. 3 against Hauser.

Crothersville Tigers

Like Trinity, Crothersville also is in Year 2 for head coach Bryant Layman.

The Tigers got off to a slow start last season but finished strong when transfers Preston West and Adam Turner became eligible to play.

Turner is battling an injury to start this season, but West is in the senior class with Will Ragan and Curtis Thompson.

It’s a small but talented junior class with Lucas Hilton and Elijah Plasse, and the Tigers have a promising sophomore group with players like Beau Napier, Dirk Crater and Corey Reynolds.

Crothersville opens its season at Waldron on Tuesday night and will open at home on Saturday night against Orleans.

Medora Hornets

Medora didn’t have any seniors a year ago, so the Hornets are returning all of its players this season and adding quite a few newcomers, as well.

The Hornets have the luxury of having their two leading scorers back in Shepard Earl (15.3 points per game) and Braxton McCory (12 points per game).

Medora also has Eli Sturgill and Dawson Cornett back, and both of them played big minutes on varsity last year.

With four freshmen on the roster, this will be a much deeper team filled with experience and youth for Mark Morin to coach this season. Morin is in his eighth year with the program.

The Hornets open Tuesday night at Shawe Memorial and will play their first home game on Dec. 9 against Martinsville Tabernacle.
