Ann Bernice Hoevener, age 73, of Crothersville, passed away on Wednesday, October 5, 2022, at Hoosier Christian Village, Brownstown.

Mrs. Hoevener was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Sauers, and was a member of the Sauers Ladies Aid. She also was a member of the Wegan home economics club.

Ann sold flowers at various stands in Jackson County, worked as a secretary and manager of H &R Block in Scottsburg, and she was a babysitter to children she considered her own.

Mrs. Hoevener loved spending time with her family, especially being a Mimi to her granddaughter, Sakhari, as she was her “pride and joy”. She enjoyed crafts, especially making her Jesus frames and doing needlepoint for her family, friends, special nurses, and sick people. She also enjoyed cooking, baking, especially making her homemade fudge during the holidays, designing flower arrangements for various occasions, and being chairman of the Sauers fall supper and the Sauers fair stand over the years.

Ann was known for coming up with the idea of the “pink tractor” for cancer awareness in memory of her daughter, Lisa. She very much loved to watch her beloved husband, Wilbur Lee, driving the pink tractor in local parades.

Born on November 6, 1948, in Hazard, Kentucky, she was the daughter of John and Eva (Gay) Wilson, both of whom preceded her in death. On October 26, 1968, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Sauers, she married Wilbur Lee Hoevener and he survives in Crothersville.

Survivors also include one daughter, Wendy (Greg) Shaw of Indianapolis; one granddaughter, Sakhari Shaw of Indianapolis; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Harold (Melba) Hoevener, Joan Hoevener, Donald (Jackie) Hoevener, Paul (Barbie) Hoevener, and Alan (Mitzi) Hoevener; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Hoevener was also preceded in death by a daughter, Lisa Ann Hoevener; her sister and brother-in-law, Peggy and George Prather; and brother-in-law, Marvin Hoevener.

Funeral services for Ann Bernice Hoevener will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 10, 2022, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Sauers, with Pastor Craig Muhlbach officiating. Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 9, 2022, at Spurgeon Funeral Home, Inc., Brownstown, and from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, October 10, 2022, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Sauers.

Interment will follow at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Sauers Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Sauers Expansion Fund, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Sauers Cemetery Fund, or Don and Dana Myers Cancer Center.
