Mill hosting creative writing class for girls, women

Beck’s Mill will be hosting a creative writing class in partnership with the Indiana University Center for Rural Engagement from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the mill, 4433 S. Beck’s Mill Road, Salem.

Award-winning poet and IU professor Catherine Bowman will lead the class for girls and women of all ages.

Inspired by the beauty and history of Beck’s Mill, participants will engage in imaginative writing together as they excavate and unearth aspects of their lives, community, ancestry, history, roots, origins and lineages, both actual and imagined.

There also will be a tour of the mill along with writing prompts and exercises to inspire attendees as they work with names, creation stories, myths, inheritances, memory, story and poem-making to explore their lives past and present and the way these explorations can help them shape their futures. There will be a chance to work with short fiction, poetry and creative nonfiction.

The class is free, but donations to the mill are always appreciated. All levels of writers are welcome, from beginners to the more experienced. Lunch will be provided.
