Owls primed for huge HHC matchup with Highlanders

If there was a positive takeaway from a 34-12 loss, it’s that Seymour head coach Tyson Moore felt all of the mistakes his team made last week at Columbus East were preventable.

The Owls got off to a really nice start against the Olympians before a series of turnovers turned the game around, and Seymour was never able to recover.

Moore classified it as five turnovers in the game — three were turnovers on downs in the red zone and two fumbles.

“You’re not going to win a game, especially against a good team, with five turnovers,” Moore said. “A lot of people don’t include TOD’s, which are turnovers on downs, as your cliché turnover, but I do. We did it three times in the red zone, and we lost by three touchdowns. That right there was a big key in our lack of success.”

Converting 100% of red zone trips is an offensive goal Seymour has had for the season and for each game.

After such a big win against Jeffersonville two weeks ago, Moore was disappointed Seymour couldn’t keep it rolling at East, but the Owls aren’t panicking.

“It was 100% preventable,” Moore said. “A lot of the stuff we did to ourselves on Friday night was very much in what we can control.”

The Owls have a big opportunity at home this Friday when they welcome in a Floyd Central team they haven’t played since 2020.

Last year’s game was canceled due to COVID-19, so the Owls and Highlanders haven’t met since Oct. 16, 2020. Floyd Central won that game 49-7.

“That last time we played, it was probably one of the better teams Floyd has had in awhile,” Moore said.

He said when Seymour was scouting Floyd Central for last year’s game, the Highlanders were a lot younger.

“Last year, they seemed to be a lot like us,” he said. “They were younger and a little more inexperienced. We saw they’ve got a lot of juniors and seniors playing again this season, and they pose a lot of problems for us offensively and defensively.”

In a Hoosier Hills Conference that Moore thinks is up for grabs, a win Friday night would go a long way for this Seymour team that’s 1-2 overall but 1-1 in the HHC.

“We understand if we want to stay in the conference picture, we have to find a way to get a win on Friday,” Moore said. “I believe this conference is wide open. I don’t believe there’s a whole lot of separation from team to team.”

The Highlanders also are 1-2 this season but haven’t played a conference game yet. They lost 42-7 and 45-7 to two Kentucky schools to start the year, and they got their first win last week at Silver Creek 27-13.

Friday night’s game at Bulleit Stadium is scheduled to kick off at 7 p.m.

“We’ve had two great days of practice this week, and I’m hoping we can put together a third one and go into Floyd fighting,” Moore said.
