Multiple agencies were involved in a vehicle pursuit that crossed into Jackson County on Thursday morning.

The more than 20-mile pursuit ended when a vehicle being driven by Kalesha Benjamin, 28, of Mobile, Alabama, struck a tire deflation device.

She now faces Level 6 felony charges of resisting law enforcement using a vehicle and criminal recklessness with a vehicle and misdemeanor charges of reckless driving, resisting law enforcement, disorderly conduct, leaving the scene of an accident and operating a vehicle while never having received a driver’s license. She also was wanted on a warrant out of Jefferson County, Kentucky.

According to a news release from the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, at 11:20 a.m., First Sgt. Johnney Coomer attempted to perform a traffic stop on Interstate 65 near the 25.5 mile marker in southern Scott County.

A female driver reportedly attempted to run another vehicle off of the roadway after becoming involved in a road-rage incident, allegedly ramming the other vehicle as they both traveled north on I-65, police said.

After stopping both vehicles, the female driver, identified as Benjamin, drove away, and a pursuit ensued.

Coomer was joined by several Scottsburg Police Department vehicles as he pursued the fleeing vehicle north on the interstate. The vehicle wound up striking a tire deflation device at the 48 mile marker in Jackson County, eventually coming to a stop near the 47 mile marker south of Seymour after it turned back south on the interstate.

Benjamin was arrested at the scene and transported to the Scott County Detention Center in Scottsburg.

The investigative report has been referred to the Scott County Prosecutor’s Office for formal charging once the facts of the case are reviewed, police said.

The investigation is ongoing, and more arrests may follow.

Also assisting with this incident were the Austin Police Department, Crothersville Police Department, Seymour Police Department, Jackson County Sheriff’s Department and Scott County Emergency Dispatch Center.
