Seymour looks to bounce back against Jeffersonville Friday

Head coach Tyson Moore challenged his team Friday and again Monday after the Owls suffered a disappointing 35-7 loss at Greenwood last week.

So far this week, the team has responded to the challenge.

“So far, we’ve had two pretty good days of practice,” Moore said. “We’ll be able to tell a lot about the character of our team about how we respond after that loss on Friday. To follow it up with the production we’ve had the last two days has been promising. We’ve got to put together another good day (Wednesday) and then lead into Thursday pregame.”

Seymour (0-1) will host Jeffersonville this Friday for the Owls’ home opener at Bulleit Stadium.

The Red Devils didn’t play last week, so when it comes to film, there’s not much to choose from. Teams don’t show their full arsenal in scrimmages, and when Seymour played at Jeff last year, there are players who are now graduated and new ones who are on the team this fall.

“It’s hard whenever a team doesn’t play and all you have is their scrimmage tape and tape from last year because you don’t know what you’re going to get,” Moore said. “It’s hard to get a clear picture of what they’re going to do, but we have a pretty decent idea. We prepare what we can and make adjustments during the game.”

Last year at Jeff was a tale of two halves for Seymour. The Owls were trailing 34-0 in the first half but then made a big comeback, outscoring Jeff 36-13 in the second half before losing 47-36.

One thing that normally holds true for the Red Devils is the explosiveness they can present with their athleticism.

“We‘ve got to keep them contained,” Moore said. “We don’t want to let their quarterback do a lot on his feet. Then we’ve got to make sure that we tackle on first contact because we can’t give up yards after contact.”

For Seymour, the Owls will be rolling with a new starting quarterback Friday. After starting Will Gray against Greenwood, Moore has decided to go with Bret Perry this week.

Perry replaced Gray toward the end of the last week’s game.

“That was a discussion we had over the weekend,” Moore said. “Both quarterbacks have been getting reps this week, but Bret will get this opportunity this Friday.”

There wasn’t much that went right for Seymour offensively last week, so Moore hopes the Owls can turn that around this week.

“As a whole, our running backs have to be a big part in getting the running game going,” he said. “We had some opportunities last Friday. Our offensive line executed pretty well, and it was just a missed step by our running backs. So we’ve got to get the run game going quick, and we’ve got to be accurate with our throws. From a receivers standpoint, we need to do a better job of catching balls.”

Kickoff at Bulleit Stadium is slated for 7 p.m.
