Bridge work covered

Thumbs up to Friends of the Medora Covered Bridge for organizing the 11th annual Dinner on the Bridge this past Saturday evening. The organization’s main fundraiser helps pay for the upkeep around the 434-foot bridge, which draws about 20,000 from across the country and around the world each year.

Distinguished

Thumbs up to the nine participants in the Jackson County Distinguished Young Woman program Saturday in the Brownstown Central High School auditorium. The contestants were Emma Hughbanks, Camryn Thompson, Madison Stuckwisch (Warren/Silver Spirit Award), Carly Kaiser (first runner-up), Kate Connell, Grace Lewis, Marlo Cornn (winner), Madaline Schepman (second runner-up) and Karrigon Mails. The national scholarship program is designed to inspire high school senior girls to develop their full individual potential through a fun, transformative experience that culminates in a celebratory showcase of their accomplishments, according to distinguishedyw.org. The program strives to give every young woman the opportunity to further her education and prepare for a successful future.

A fitting award

Thumbs up to the Seymour Noon Lions Club for establishing the Frank and Sandy Ruane Service Dedication Award. The longtime Seymour Noon Lions Club members, who have both passed away, were dedicated to the Lions Club, Indiana Lions Club, Indiana Lions Foundation and community. The annual award will be given to a club member who shows that same level of dedication that the Ruanes did.

It takes a village

Thumbs up to the local churches and individuals who donated funds to help pay for personal care items, including toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, deodorant and soap, to Medora students and providing tennis shoes for 112 of those students with the help of Shoe Sensation in Seymour. The students also could receive free immunizations and haircuts during an event recently held at the school. Kara Hunt, the junior-senior high school principal, said the goal of the program is to make it easier on families in the community.
