The Kum Join Us Extension Homemakers Club met Aug. 2 at St. Paul Lutheran Church Borchers with Jan Otte hosting.

The meeting opened with our club creed and the Pledge of Allegiance. Members were asked their favorite homes they’ve lived in, and most responded with their present homes.

Minutes for the June meeting were read by Karen Hendrix. New yearbooks were distributed, and the nine members present chose their desired hostess months for the year.

Our club’s Jackson County Fair queen candidate, Lexi Morris, came in first runner-up. We are so very proud of her.

The Indiana Extension Homemakers Association’s Bedford District Fall meeting will be held Aug. 17 in Charlestown. The theme this year is “Scatter Kindness Like Confetti.” Anyone wishing to attend should contact the Clark County extension office at 812-256-4591.

Ruth Ann Hendrix presented the association’s statewide project. Clubs will be making and passing out pocket hearts. Each county is encouraged to make and distribute 1,000 pocket hearts by the end of the year to encourage random acts of kindness.

Olga Otte, Ruth Ann Hendrix and Karen Hendrix brought fabric, stuffing and templates for each member to work on during our meeting and to take home and work on at their leisure. Each member was given a kit to show the finished pocket heart. Otte said it was quite relaxing to sew as we discussed topics in our meeting, and we will continue to do this at our meetings each month until the end of the year.

Mandy Otte read our lesson on fun facts about August. The month of August was named to honor the first Roman emperor, Augustus Caesar.

Aug. 11 marks the end of the Dog Days of Summer, and Aug. 19 is National Aviation Day for the birthday of Orville Wright. August 26 is Women’s Equality Day, marking women’s right to vote.

Just for fun days include Aug. 1 to 7,International Clown Week; Aug. 3 is National Watermelon Day; and Aug. 8 being National Sneak a Zucchini on your Neighbor’s Porch Day. This was the funniest of them all. Others included National S’mores Day, Left Handers Day, Honeybee Day and Kiss and Make Up Day. What a fun month.

Members talked about their visits to the fair despite all of the rain and enjoying all of the great food and exhibits. Olga Otte, Karen Wiesehan, Ruth Ann Hendrix and Karen Hendrix displayed items at the fair this year in the family arts building.

Jan Otte read our devotions about “Freeing Yourself From Worry” by Jill Briscoe. It can be found at justbetweenus.org. Jan said like the walls of Jericho, we should worry about our problems only once a day and leave it with God. Putting our confidence in God gives us relief from all of the worries that plague our lives. Pray your way around the situation and leave it with God.

Jan Otte also blessed us with chicken and ham salad sandwiches from Cortland Diner along with watermelon and cantaloupe balls. A delicious homemade zucchini cake was also served.
