There was a lot of work put into the 31st annual Seymour Splash over the weekend at Shields Park Pool.

A three-day event that goes on all day, consisting of more than 400 swimmers around the state from all ages, and like the 30 years before it, the event was a success.

“A lot of work is involved from a lot of different sources, from our coaches, our parents, the city, park and rec department, a lot goes into getting this stuff set up,” Owls head coach Dave Boggs said. “It’s a big deal for everybody. It brings a lot of business to town.”

Not only was the event itself a success, but the swimmers from Seymour had pretty strong performances in the 50-meter pool, as well.

In the girls races, first-place finishes for the Owls came from Tait Birdsong in the 7-8 100 meter freestyle in 1:37.00, and Birdsong also won the 100 meter butterfly in 2:05.65. Jenna Woods won the 9-10 100 meter freestyle (1:21.71) and the 100 meter breaststroke (49.35).

Hope Couch won the 9-10 100 meter butterfly in 2:05.34, Kylie Grove won the open 400 meter freestyle in 5:45.34 and Katya Cox won the open 100 meter backstroke in 1:14.70.

For the boys races, Conner Schafer won the 11-12 400 meter freestyle in 5:24.80, and William Johnson won the open 200 meter backstroke in 2:35.36.

Then, Pedro Cerino Rico won three events over the weekend. The rising junior at Seymour High School won the open 100 meter freestyle (58.22), open 100 meter backstroke (1:06.50) and open 200 meter IM (2:34.16).

“We had a really good weekend,” Boggs said. “Our last meet three weeks ago was at the (IU) Natatorium, one of the finest pools in the world, so I was afraid a little bit of a letdown, but really, they swam better than they swam at the natatorium. When that’s all said and done, we were very pleased with how the kids performed.”

Coming up for Seymour swimmers, they have the Center Grove Stars and Stripes Invitational tonight for ages 12 and under, this weekend they have another meet at the natatorium for Age Group State and then the following weekend, they’re going to Franklin Community High School for divisionals.

Those three upcoming events will conclude their summer schedule.
