ORLANDO — Five gymnasts from Gymnastics Lane in Seymour showed out in a big way on the national stage last weekend.

Kinley Beard, Aubree Fiscus, Emma Lucas, Mia Dailey and Piper Hawkins were the representatives at the National Gymnastics Association’s nationals meet in the Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. The meet hosted gymnasts from 47 states of all levels and ages.

Not only did the Seymour gymnasts bring some hardware, but some also brought home some national titles.

For Beard, the youngest of the five, her national rankings last weekend were as follows: Ninth on vault, 11th on bars, third on beam (national title), fifth on floor and ninth all-around.

Lucas was 16th on vault, 19th on bars, 12th on beam, eighth on floor and 16th all-around. Fiscus was seventh on vault, fifth on bars, seventh on beam, seventh on floor and sixth all-around.

Dailey, an incoming freshman at Seymour High School, was 11th on vault, eighth on bars, second on beam, first on floor (national title) and third all-around (national title). Dailey said prior to nationals that floor was her favorite event, and she showed why last weekend.

Piper Hawkins, who will be a senior at SHS this fall, was eighth on vault, 15th on bars, 12th on beam, 21st on floor and 13th all-around. This was Hawkins’ first time competing in club gymnastics in three years. She has been focusing on high school competition lately, but wanted to do club again this summer.

Hawkins said she wanted to clean up her vault heading into nationals, and after putting in work, vault ended up being her highest place finished.

Every single Gymnastics Lane gymnasts had at least one top 10 finish at nationals, which coaches Angie Villarreal and Liz Copeland were very pleased to see.

“This event is the largest meet these athletes have ever attended in their gymnastics career,” Villarreal said. “I was very proud of them. All of theses athletes placed in the top ten on at least one of their events. Several of them made podium, bringing back titles for their age divisions.”

The girls qualified for nationals by getting an all-around score of 32 or better at the state meet, which was held in Fort Wayne in April. They got some regional experience in May, but nationals was the biggest stage they’ve been on.

Villarreal remembers taking certain individuals to nationals in the past, but she hopes taking five gymnasts this year will carry momentum into next year and continue to grow the success of the Gymnastics Lane program.

“Not really knowing how the girls would respond to the nerves of the day, I didn’t have expectations at all for placings,” Villarreal said. “These ladies have had a great season, and they really finished the strongest I have seen them in a competition this weekend. I can’t wait to see what they do and where they go next season. Hopefully, we will have more Gymnastics Lane athletes at next year’s nationals.”
