Kids can bring out their inner artist during the Downtown Chalk Around on Saturday in Seymour.

The event is planned for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Shoppers can grab a punch card at a participating store and start making the rounds for a chance to win a prize. To participate, get your card punched at the shops listed on the card and then turn it in at your last stop.

Along the way, grab some chalk and post a picture to social media using #downtownshoparound to get bonus entries for the giveaway.

Prizes include four $25 gift certificates (to the participating store of your choice), two $50 gift certificates and one $100 gift certificate.

As a bonus, for every picture posted using #downtownshoparound, the participant posting the photo will be entered to win two more $50 gift certificates.

Stores participating in the Downtown Chalk Around include 3’Z Company, Hearts Desire Gift Shop, Edward Jones Andrea Hall, Dragonfly Boutique, Lea Boutique, Greemann’s Furniture and Mattress Gallery, Seedlings + Co., Shoppe 425, The Magic of Books Bookstore, 1852 Cafe, Stout’s Upscale Resale, Seymour Healthy Zone and Indiana Vapor Labs.

Roger Wessel with Berkshire Hathaway is the gift card sponsor.

Also throughout the day, there will be live music by This Old Guitar Music Store students in front of the John Mellencamp mural (102 W. Second St.),

Burkhart Plaza (101 S. Chestnut St.), Steinker Platz (212 S. Chestnut St.) and the Mellencamp mural will have chalk, bubbles, hula hoops and other small games for kids to enjoy.

Yoga will be offered for $10 by Michelle Stephens from 10 a.m. to noon at Steinker Platz.

Ideas about adding more activities into this month’s event were brainstormed at the March 15 Healthy Jackson County Increasing Physical Activity Workgroup meeting via Zoom.

The group looks for ways to offer Jackson County residents ways to move more in a variety of ways through events held in Jackson County.

Those in the discussion during the Zoom meeting were Molly Marshall, Purdue Extension Jackson County health and human sciences educator; Brandon Terrell, athletic director for the Boys and Girls Club of Seymour; Bri Roll, Seymour Main Street executive director; Meghan Warren, director of quality and care management at Schneck Medical Center; Bethany Daugherty, Schneck Medical Center registered dietitian nutritionist and Healthy Jackson County coordinator; and Katelyn Kutemeier, Purdue Extension wellness coordinator.

Ideas were shared on ways to incorporate physical activity into events, including the Downtown Chalk Around. Other ideas were discussed for the near future.

Marshall said the Physical Activity Workgroup is working with Seymour Main Street to partner with them on their Aug. 13 Downtown Shop Around event.

“We will be finalizing those details between now and at our next meeting at 11 a.m. on July 19,” she said.
