Auditions announced for youth theater show
Auditions for Jackson County Young Artists’ Theatre’s production of “The Enchanted Bookshop” are Friday at Royal Off-the-Square Theatre, 121 W. Walnut St., Brownstown.
They will be at 9 a.m. for ages 6 to 9, 1 p.m. for ages 9 to 12 and 6 p.m. for ages 9 to 12.
The cast will consist of 23 roles. The show also needs many behind-the-scenes volunteers, including backstage, lights/sound, ushers, concession workers, etc. Family members are invited to pitch in and help.
Show dates are July 15, 16, 17, 22 and 23.
During the day, A Likely Story may look like any other used bookstore. But at night, it’s a place where magic happens. That’s when the characters inside the books come alive.
Six of those characters — Dorothy Gale, Robin Hood, Pollyanna, Sherlock Holmes, Heidi and Tom Sawyer — long to help Margie, the scatterbrained owner, save her struggling store. But they’re not allowed to leave the building or be seen by human eyes.
So when a pair of smugglers comes looking for a stolen necklace hidden inside one of the books, the characters are torn. Should they warn Margie and risk disappearing forever? Or can they find a way to defeat the crooks without being seen?
Featuring additional appearances by such beloved literary characters as Queen of Hearts, Long John Silver and Doctor Dolittle, this comedy celebrates the joy of reading in a fresh, fun-filled way.
Deadline approaches to apply for recycling grant
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management recently announced the availability of grant funding for recycling projects from the Recycling Market Development Program.
Eligible candidates may seek a grant ranging from $50,000 to $500,000. Proposals are accepted through June 15.
Public and private businesses, local government, solid waste management districts and nonprofit organizations located and doing business in Indiana are eligible to submit proposals for funding.
Proposals must show a need, an increase in recyclable material collection or consumption, a reduction in municipal solid waste shipped for final disposal or improved partnerships with communities, including economic impacts and increased public awareness of recycling opportunities through tangible outreach and education efforts.
Projects should demonstrate sustainability and an understanding of the changing economy for recyclers and look at where monies can be used most effectively to increase statewide recycling.
Final funding determinations will be made this fall.

Nominees sought for state’s highest agricultural award
Nominations are being accepted for the 2022 AgriVision Award, the highest agricultural honor presented by the state.
This award, now in its 16th year, was established by the lieutenant governor and Indiana State Department of Agriculture to recognize Indiana’s agricultural leaders who are ensuring the state is and remains a global center for food and agricultural innovation and commercialization.
The AgriVision Award is open to any Indiana resident and all sectors of the agriculture industry, from bioenergy to livestock to the agbiosciences. Any person or organization may submit a nomination through July 1.
Previous AgriVision Award winners have included individuals who have made significant contributions to the agriculture industry, whether it’s developing a new technology, managing an agribusiness or organization or working to address a global issue.

Once a winner has been selected, the award will be presented by Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch and ISDA Director Bruce Kettler during the Celebration of Agriculture at the 2022 Indiana State Fair.
Gardening classes being offered this month
Jackson County ag and natural resource educators are offering gardening class from 6 to 8 p.m. June 15, 16, 22 and 23 at the Jackson County Courthouse, 111 S. Main St., Brownstown.
The schedule is flower gardening June 15, vegetable gardening June 16, woody landscape plants June 22 and lawn care June 23.
The classes to be held in the old Jackson Circuit Court and taught by gardening expert Richard Beckort with Purdue Extension Jackson County are open to everyone. You may attend one session or all.
