Braves wrap up track season at awards banquet

The Brownstown Central boys and girls track and field teams celebrated their 2022 season on Tuesday night in the school’s cafeteria.

For the Lady Braves, they finished the regular season with a 16-6 record and went 6-2 in the Mid-Southern Conference.

Head coach Maria Conklin had numerous awards to hand out to her team.

The most valuable award went to Camryn Thompson, who was a regional qualifier in four events: 100 hurdles, 300 hurdles, 4×100 relay and 4×400 relay.

The most improved award went to Taylor Loudermilk, Maddy Schepman won the mental attitude award, Addie Shelton won outstanding field event, Jazz Yeadon won outstanding sprinter and Paige McKain won outstanding distance runner.

Other regional qualifiers for the Braves were McKain in the 1600, Shelton in the shot put and Schepman, Yeadon and Noe McPherson in the 4×1 and 4×4 relays.

Thompson earned all-conference for winning the 100 hurdles and all-conference honorable mention in the 300 hurdles, while McKain was honorable mention in the 3200.

Maddy Hackman earned academic all-state, and Loudermilk and McKain were both academic all-state honorable mention.

For the Brownstown boys team, they finished 17-5 in the regular season, placing third at conference and fifth at sectional.

Head coach Derrick Koch handed out his awards, and Dustyn Kocsis earned MVP after advancing to the state meet in discus. Kocsis was a sectional champion in both shot put and discus and placed third at regional in the discus to advance to state for the first time in his career.

The most improved award went to Kocsis’ throwing partner in Brayden Millick. Lane Zike and Frank Rohr both earned the mental attitude award, Kocsis won outstanding field event, Caleb Cummings won outstanding sprinter and Chance Ratliff won outstanding distance runner.

Kocsis was all-conference in discus, and Garrett Driver was all-conference in the 400.

Earning all-conference honorable mention were Gregory Hutcheson (300 hurdles, 4×400), Zike (4×4), Isiaah Engle (4×4), Driver (4×4) and Kocsis (shot put).

Other regional qualifiers for the Braves were Millick in discus, Engle in 300 hurdles, Driver in 400, Ratliff in 3200 and the 4×400 team of Hutcheson, Zike, Engle and Driver.
