The Seymour boys track and field team gathered in the school’s auditorium at Seymour High School to wrap up its 2022 season last week.

In addition to handing out junior varsity and varsity letters, head coach Randy Fife had four individual awards to give out.

Starting with the field event award, that distinction went to Bryson Darlage. Darlage was a regional qualifier for the Owls in long jump, having a personal-best leap of 21 feet, 2.75 inches, which he did at the sectional.

Darlage just missed out on qualifying for state, placing fifth in long jump at regional. He was third place in the Hoosier Hills Conference meet, and he also was a regional qualifier in high jump.

The most valuable award went to Jude Bane, who was a regional qualifier in both the 1600 and 3200. Bane was the sectional champion in the 3200 with a time of 10:13.38, and he was third in the mile at sectional when he ran a PR time of 4:33.27.

Bane was the Owls’ top distance runner all season, and he had two top-three finishes at the HHC meet as well in both of his events.

Fife then handed out two outstanding runner awards, which went to Michael Proffer and Jaylan Johnson. Proffer started out the season as an 800 runner, but he found a home with the 400 meter dash, especially on the 4×400 relay, which Johnson anchored.

The duo helped Seymour win the 4×400 relay at sectional with a time of 3:33.62. Then they helped Seymour run another PR time the next week at regional, falling one spot shy of qualifying for state with a time of 3:32.28.

Johnson also was a regional qualifier in long

jump with Darlage and in the solo 400 meter dash when he ran a PR time of 51.68 at sectional.

Bane and Proffer also earned first team academic all-state along with Josh Rennekamp.

Aside from Proffer, who graduated, the Owls will be getting back a lot of production next season from Bane, Darlage and Johnson.
