Indianapolis man arrested for auto theft, fraud

An Indianapolis man was arrested recently for trying to buy a vehicle with a fraudulent check in March, police report.

Charron Eugene Johnson, 18, faces charges of theft of a vehicle, a Level 5 felony, and fraud, a Level 6 felony.

Lt. C.J. Foster said in a news release that on March 24, the Seymour Police Department received a complaint from an individual saying they sold their 2015 Jeep Wrangler on the previous day to an individual from Indianapolis for $24,000.

The day after the sale, the seller learned they received a fraudulent Bank of America cashier’s check.

Seymour police utilized various investigative tools and learned the Jeep was in the Indianapolis area. An investigation found that vehicle had been registered to an individual, Johnson, on North Graham Avenue in Indianapolis.

Investigators with the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles assisted in locating Johnson.

On Wednesday, police located the Jeep at the North Graham Avenue location. The person who bought the vehicle told police they purchased it for $4,500 from an individual who had previously been identified as a possible suspect. The person also told police he wondered why he had never received the title for the vehicle.

During the investigation, police took possession of the vehicle and had it towed to a secure facility.

After locating the vehicle, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department auto theft unit assisted Seymour police in locating Johnson at a residence in the 800 block of Gray Street in Indianapolis.

Johnson had previously told police he had never been in the Seymour area, and during an investigation, police were able to prove otherwise.

Seymour police attempted to interview Johnson a second time, but he declined.
