Owls post Senior Night victory

The Seymour Owls baseball team celebrated senior night Tuesday with a 6-4 win against Charlestown at American Legion Field.

Before the game senior players Will Cottrill, Aden Burnside, Andrew Levine and Jounes Rodriquez were honored.

Owls coach Jeremy Richey said, “It was a good win. That’s one that we want to get every year. These four seniors have worked hard. They’ve shown up every day and done everything they can for us. I’m really happy we found a way to win that one.”

Seymour had one of its best innings of the season, scoring five times in the fifth to pull out the victory.

Aden Burnside opened the bottom of the fifth with a walk. With one out, Skylar Cockerham lined a double into right-center that brought in pinch-runner Grayson Key. Will Gray singled to score Cockerham.

Bret Perry doubled to left-center to drive in pinch-runner Brady Harpe. Charlie Longmeier tripled into right-center to score Perry, and when the center fielder’s throw flew past the third baseman, Longmeier scored.

Richey enjoyed the rally from the third-base coaching box. “It started off with a big double out of Cockerham. That was good for him to come off the bench and be able to run into a ball and that kind of got us rolling.

“That’s what this group needs. Every once in a while they kind of get comfortable. We needed a big shot and (Cockerham) did that for us, then obviously Bret and Charlie came up and did what they do, what they’ve done all year. That was a good inning, obviously an inning we needed tonight because we didn’t get much else done.

The Pirates scored a run in the top of the first, and the Owls tied the score in the second when Treyton McCormick walked, moved to second on a passed ball and came around to score on a hit by Burnside.

Perry and Burnside both had two hits and an RBI.

Charlestown took the lead with a run in the third, then used three hits and a Seymour error to score two in the sixth.

Darlage, Perry, McCormick and Gavin Leavy combined to allow the Pirates nine hits, one earned run, they struck out eight and walked four.

Richey said his plan to have four pitchers throw. “We went ahead and did it because we’ve got one game Friday and two on

Saturday (at Richmond), so that leaves everybody available now, which is what we wanted to do.

“We’ve got the whole staff going up there to win three games and we’re going to do whatever it takes to win the tournament.” The Owls (15-9) won the tournament last year.
