Brownstown’s Camryn Thompson had been trying to heal a pulled hip flexor prior to the girls Mid-Southern Conference meet on Tuesday at Corydon Central High School.

As much as Thompson was trying to get right physically, she was also trying to get right mentally to be prepared.

She came out Tuesday and in her first event, Thompson won the 100 hurdles with a time of 16.64, just edging out Katelyn Grady from Silver Creek, who ran a 16.66.

“I haven’t been 100 percent in about two weeks, so I came out tonight just ready to give it my all, just to see what it takes, and a lot of it went into mental training,” she said.

Thompson was the only Brave Tuesday who took home first place in an event, accounting for 10 points in that event as Brownstown scored 83 team points to finish third place in the meet. Charlestown won the meet with a team score of 152, and Corydon was second at 114.

“I’m very pleased with third,” head coach Maria Conklin said. “I knew going in we had some tough competition with Charlestown and Corydon, so I’m really happy with the way we competed.”

Thompson also ran the 300 hurdles on Tuesday, and she placed second in that event with a time of 51.93. She was happy with her placement as one of the MSC’s best hurdlers.

“It was really important because I’ve been working so hard for this,” Thompson said. “It’s really exciting to see how much I’ve improved this year.”

“She wanted to win a race,” Conklin said of Thompson. “She came in the 100s and out-leaned a girl and really excited about how she performed there.”

Other top-five finishers for the Braves included Taylor Loudermilk placing fourth in the discus with a throw of 90-3, and Addie Shelton was fifth with a 90-2. Paige McKain was fourth in the 1600 with a time of 5:54.21, and McKain was second in the 3200 with a time of 13:04.21.

Kaitlyn McCormick was third in the pole vault with a

height of 7-0, and Tori Lokey was fourth in that event with the same height as McCormick.

Jazz Yeadon was fifth in the 400 with a time of 1:06.98, and she was fourth in the long jump with a 15-2. Maddy Schepman was fifth in the high jump with a 4-6, and she was fourth in the 200 in a time of 28.03.

“Pole vaulters went three-four, that was really big for us tonight,” Conklin said. “Throwers scored some big points for us. We had a few PRs and we had some not as great performances, but we’ll be ready to go for sectional. Jazz ran well, and relays looked pretty good tonight.”

Yeadon, Schepman, Thompson and Noe McPherson were fourth in the 4×100 relay, and that same quartet was fifth in the 4×400 relay.

Conklin said the Braves tapered off a bit this week, but the bigger taper will begin for sectionals, which takes place next Tuesday at Seymour.

“We kind of backed off a little starting the end of last week, and we’re just gonna make sure to get everybody healthy and be ready to compete, and we’ll see what happens at sectionals,” Conklin said.
