Seymour’s baseball team scored runs in its first five at-bats, then added four scores in the top of the seventh for an 11-1 win over Trinity Lutheran at Alf Snyder Field Monday afternoon.

The Owls took advantage of some shaky defense (four errors, three wild pitches) by the Cougars to score five unearned runs. Trinity pitchers walked 12.

Vince Wilson led off the top of the first with a single and scored an infield out by Charlie Longmeier.

Skylar Cockerham and Jack VonDielingen both walked and scored on errors in the second. Longmeier singled, advanced on an error and scored on a single by Treyton McCormick in the third. In the fifth, McCormick singled and scored on a sacrifice fly by VonDielingen, and Cockerham was safe on a fielder’s choice and scored on an error to make it 7-0.

Braden Richey retired the first 11 Cougar batters before Sage Broughton was safe on an error with two out in the fourth.

In the fifth, Kowan Gross was safe on a fielder’s choice. Luke Coomler walked, both runners moved up a base on a balk, and Levi Pottschmidt singled to center to drive in Gross.

Owls Coach Jeremy Richey said, “It was a good win. Offensively, we weren’t very good today, but we got enough timely hits to kind of break it open and we did a nice job defensively and pitching.”

In the top of the seventh, VonDielingen and Will Cottrill hit singles and Will Gray walked to load the bases. Bret Perry and Longmeier had two-run singles.

Braden Richey pitched the first five innings and allowed one hit, one run, he struck out seven and walked two. Mikey Wright pitched the final two innings and had three strike outs and three walks.

Coach Richey said, “Braden threw an inning at Austin, but this was his first varsity start, and the first time Mikey (pitched in a varsity game). I’m very pleased with them coming in and throwing strikes, and being aggressive and looking pretty good.”

The Owls (10-6) are scheduled to play at Southwestern (Hanover) today, and the Cougars (2-14) are scheduled to go to Oldenburg Academy today.
