Braves rout Eagles behind Huddleston’s perfect game

It was a perfect night for Brownstown pitcher Rylin Huddleston on Thursday, literally.

The Braves’ junior pitched a perfect game, allowing no hits, no walks, no errors and nobody on base to help propel Brownstown to a 16-0 Mid-Southern Conference win over Austin.

“She started out ahead in the count for almost every batter,” head coach Darren Bryant said. “She threw hard tonight. Last game, we got on her a bit because she wasn’t spinning the ball very hard. She was confident and driving off the mound hard.”

Huddleston said she knew she was pitching well, but didn’t try to think too much about it being a perfect game. She said she has thrown one when she was younger, but this was her first perfect game in high school.

“I knew I was doing good, my backup was amazing,” Huddleston said. “Mentally and physically, I was just focusing on the batter one pitch at a time.”

There was stretch from the final batter she faced in the first inning through the third inning, where Huddleston struck out seven consecutive batters. She struck out the side in both the second and third innings. Huddleston finished the game with 10 Ks.

On the other side of the ball, Brownstown had its way. In the bottom of the first, Kelsey Schneider, Emily Singleton and Brooke Meahl all got on base, loading the bases with no outs for Rylee May. May hit a two-run double and the Braves had an early lead.

In the second inning, Singleton had an RBI triple that drove in Huddleston to make it 3-0, and then the runs started to come in bunches.

Brownstown scored four more runs in the third inning, and then added nine more runs in the fourth inning, starting out with a two-run homer from May over the center field wall.

“It feels good,” May said of the home run, her second of the season. “Usually I don’t see that it’s going over, it’s about halfway through when I see that it is. It feels nice.”

May was 3-for-3 on the day with four RBI to lead the Braves.

All 12 batters Brownstown put up at the plate on Thursday got on base. Schneider, Singleton, Meahl, May, Erin Singleton, Kyndle Huddleston, Rylin Huddleston, Kinzee Dean and Adelynn Anderson all had at least one hit, and Emily Dillman walked to get on base. Madison Brittain and Zoe Stuckwisch both got on base via errors on Austin’s infield.

In addition to May’s four RBI, Emily Singleton had three, Erin Singleton had two, Kyndle Huddleston had two, Anderson had two, Dillman had one and Rylin Huddleston had one.

“We’ve got a deep lineup,” Bryant said. “I’m comfortable playing a lot of those girls at anytime. Everybody came in and had good at-bats, they weren’t chasing any pitches. Good base running, and everyone came in and played a good role.”

When asked how it is pitching with a lead up on the scoreboard, Huddleston said “it’s a lot less nerve-wracking.”

The Braves are now 6-1 to start this season with their only loss coming to a good Bedford North Lawrence team.

“I think our strengths is our defense in the infield,” May said. “Our lineup is definitely better, too.”

Bryant agreed, saying “we should have a solid defensive team all year. We’ve got some tough competition coming up.”

That tough competition starts tonight when the Braves welcome a one-loss West Washington team to town for a 5:30 p.m. start time. Brownstown hopes to continue its solid start to the season.

“We’re always there for each other,” Rylin Huddleston said. “Our communication is good because we are very close with each other and are with each other like 24/7 it feels like. Our bond is really good.”
